Here is an analysis that suggests BSU football's financial problems are not as dire as I had previously believed:
Study estimates revenue produced by top college football players
The most elite players in college football increase revenue for their school football programs by an average of $650,000 a year, a first-of-its-kind study suggests. This is the money brought in by the highest-rated recruits coming out of high school – those given five stars by Rivals, a recruiting news service, according to researchers at The Ohio State University. Four-star recruits generated about $350,000 a year and three-star recruits increased revenue by about $150,000, while two-star recruits actually reduced revenue by about $13,000 a year for college football programs, the study found.
So all BSU needs to do is bring in 15 or 16 5-stars in the next class and the program could quite possibly break even!

It won't happen, as BSU admins will ride the football train until the very bitter end, but if Beth Goetz really wanted to make a name for herself she would cut football and not only save the athletic department, but salvage some key funds to generate success in a few key sports.

Further, before the usual lame same old positions surface here, let me say they ARE going to cut millions from the athletics budget - a budget that is already severely lacking competitiveness amongst our peers, including MAC institutions. It's insane to think this can continue, and COVID-19 just accelerates the process. Football is the obvious problem here, as it accounts (when 85 scholarships and Title IX are factored in) for at least 60% (conservatively) of our athletic budget.
Come on here and argue emotion if it makes you feel better, but the financial realities remain. It is time to throw football overboard before it sinks the entire ship.

A very difficult time for athletics is coming.

We won't be the only ones. I can see the MAC, Sun Belt, and CUSA seeing a dramatic shift in membership. Some schools dropping down a level, unless the NCAA reduces the number of sports a school sponsors to remain D1.

Yep college sports as we know them are dying. Accelerated by the current crisis. Sad.
University of Cincinnati is currently operating with a $250 million athletics deficit. Just cut mens soccer.

I keep asking and nobody ever answers - what motivation does the P5 have to put the screws to BSU? Mid-major athletics, with the exception of some mens basketball programs, just amounts to taking money from the general student body to fund some sports for the benefit of some athletes and their extremely meager "fanbases". Why should the P5 care?

www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Where%20Does%20the%20Money%20Go-WEB.PDFIt might not really be the ncaaa but more the power and influence of the power 5.. The money comes from the power 5 and is then distributed over all the other d1 schools.. If the MAC and like conferences can not make the D1 requirements then that money goes back to the power 5's who generated it in the first place. The rich get Richer(but really its the money they raised)

Mid-major athletics, with the exception of some mens basketball programs, just amounts to taking money from the general student body to fund some sports for the benefit of some athletes and their extremely meager "fanbases". Why should the P5 care? The NCAA is a giant compromise with different levels of schools. The segment it into divisions but for a number of reasons the highest division for many sports finds it desirable to have the current mix of schools and stay on friendly terms. For FB with the TV contracts no longer controlled by the NCAA the issue is probably rules.
There are some economic incentives to play only big time FB , against only P5 teams and be able to brand and market that. But the rules might be tweaked to benefit those big schools with big budgets and allow them different eligibility, recruiting and other practices. It would be easier with ONLY P5 conferences in the highest NCAA football division to change rules they want to change without the nuisance of objection by the fringe conference teams.
I don't think that is huge incentive but if they can gently push those teams out they will do so. If financial disaster helps they will take advantage of that.

Its not just football though if schools have to drop below the 16 required sports and the ncaa does not bend the rules for them.. They have to drop out of conferences that money is still kicked back to the higher schools

It’s always The money that f.... everything up. Too bad college sports just can’t be college sports anymore. Buts it’s sort of been like that for decades, but at least a chance to compete from time to time. Now death may be at the door. Sad for us underdog schools that relished the chance to knock the big boy off. Oh well.
