Watched the pregame of the Cubs-Pirates game and found the playing of the national anthem to be particularly weird without fans in the stands. But it got me thinking about why we play the national anthem before sporting contests anyway. I've been to hundreds of events, including on the Fourth of July and music concerts, that didn't include the national anthem (patriotic music of course for the 4th events, but not always the anthem). If fact, it's a rare music concert that I've attended that included the anthem. But at every sporting event, out comes the anthem. Found the link below that provides a little background. www.history.com/news/why-the-star-spangled-banner-is-played-at-sporting-eventsWith all the uproar about kneeling during the anthem, the last paragraph there makes me wonder what might happen if we just stopping playing the national anthem before games. I doubt it would cause the downfall of civilization, and it seems a fair number of Americans seem to think "Good Bless America" is the national anthem anyway. Let everyone kneel during that; it'll just seem like they're praying.

Yeah some people really get riled up about the anthem but never complain when all sizes of people wearing American flag clothing! It’s more disrespectful to see some one’s big ass sitting on old glory or Stars and Stripes up a crotch! I just don’t understand why anyone’s patriotism is in question I’m there for the event.

While I find it irritating when people don't stand for the anthem, it tells me what they think of our country, and how seriously I should take their opinion.
Very little, and even less.
And for the record, in my opinion, flag clothing is in extremely poor taste, and if I recall correctly, against US code. Technically speaking.

The issue is what the flag stands for, the protest is about that ideal being trampled. Not sure what a flag on your ass or crotch says. As you say wearing the flag as it's done is not that respectful.
Not sure the intent of either group is very thoughtful or well expressed.
Both could show intent to express genuine concern for the country I guess.

While I find it irritating when people don't stand for the anthem, it tells me what they think of our country, and how seriously I should take their opinion.[ The country or the government? I don’t like the government. I do like the ideals our country used to represent. I support standing up for constitutionally limited interference in the lives of the people and government by consent. I don’t really want to stand for the world’s policeman that lets me know each year how much of my income I am allowed to keep.

That's the part many disagree about. It is the real problem here I think. Symbols have power, slogans have power, but they aren't very precise communication.

The flag represents the country, not the government. Cite? And also I am talking about the anthem so I assume you are discussing them interchangeably.

The flag represents the country, not the government. Cite? Cite what? I don't know that it's part of US Code, if that's what you mean. That's always been my understanding. It's not like a sign when you enter a state, saying Governor So and So. It's symbolic of the ideals of what the country was founded on, that transcends mere mortals. That's why there are 13 stripes (one for each colony), and not 56 (for each signer of the Declaration of Independence).

One of those ideals the flag supposedly symbolizes and which the country was founded on was free speech, which includes things like wearing the flag on your crotch or your ass, or burning it if you so desire.

I didn't say they shouldn't be allowed to do it. But I certainly have the right to call them idiots for doing it.

A flag can also stand for oppression and hatred like the confederate flag or Nazi flag. Sporting events are not a test of one’s patriotism and I feel there is really no need worry about who stands for the anthem. Those who make a big deal of someone else’s idea of what patriotism is, is a selfish endeavor!
