I realize the star rating system on Verbal Commits isn't always a reflection of reality (Gunn was a 3 star for example), but with Ish (3 star), Walton (3.7 star), Hazen (3 star), Coleman (3 star), and Gunn (3 star), leaving, the only player we have left who isn't a 2 star is Reggie Jones (3 star) and we don't know for sure he will ever play. You have to say Whitford's recruiting results and the team he will be putting on the floor next season have never looked worse.

It's going to be hard for anyone to argue the fact that next year we are screwed. Only thing that could save us adding two transfers who fan really play.. We need them both to be all mac caliber..

There seems to be something wrong with the Gunn to Lenoir-Rhyme transfer; earlier in the day Gunn was again posted in the D1 transfer portal at Verbal Commits. It's odd that in the VC Division 2 portal Gunn still appears as a transfer to Lenoir-Rhyne, however, in both postings his profile lists him status as "Undecided." It seems that either the initial Verbal Commits transfer to L-R was premature or wrong, or a change occurred during the day. www.verbalcommits.com/players/zach-gunn

“This is probably big for them, because I’m a big-time player out of Indiana,” Gunn said. “I know (Whitford’s) pretty excited.” There is a second less well known but no less hilarious quote, and no I didn't make this up. “Coach Whitford has brought this program a long way,” Gunn said. “We'll get Ball State back to where it was, back in the early 2000’s, when they were in the (NCAA) Tournament.” I forget where did he say it or where was it printed It was a phone interview with Dakota Crawford from the Star Press. It's still out there on the internet.

Screwed? no. We know that an 8th place finish and a first round MAC tourney exit qualifies as "nearly but not quite" making the NCAA tourney. As does avoiding a tourney beatdown by Akron through COVID cancellation. So, I think the 21-22 team is capable of continuing this Whitford run of success....so defined.
