The first time I watched the Olympics was the '76 Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. Jim McKay was the host on Wide World of Sports. I was 10 at the time, and I watched, amazed at the reckless abandon that skiers would throw themselves down the side of a mountain. Bobsledders flying through their run, occasionally crashing or turning over. The hockey team didn't medal, but I still cheered them on. Speedskating, luge, and my all-time favorite, the ski jump. Those guys were a different breed. I couldn't tell if they were brave, crazy, or just idiots. But it was fun as hell to watch.
I watched the '80 games, and the Miracle on Ice, in much the same way. But as I got older, and learned more about the politics involved, the money, corruption, and doping issues, it lost a lot of its luster. I still enjoy the sports, and the Olympics as an idea, but the IOC has ruined it. The fact that it's hosted this time by a nation that's so oppressive, plus the whole COVID issue... well, I just can't be part of that.

I don't care for events that are decided buy judges. I despise the X-Game events, which seem to be the focal point of NBC's coverage. I do like it when the snowboarders actually race against each other. Most of what is shown in prime time is a repeat and the results are already known. I didn't care for how NBC covered the last winter Olympics and this one has been even worse. And I'm sick to death of NBC glorifying every athletes debilitating adversity (no matter how totally laughable it was) in their quest for Olympic glory. NBC did a lot of that crap in the Super Bowl pre-game to a point I turned it off. Add in that NBC turns everything into a social justice re-education camp moment and I'd just rather watch something else.

There are a lot of people like you who have tuned out of a lot of things due to being tired of having the establishment's approved political and social stances shoved down their throat at every opportunity. I sometimes wonder to what extent media outlets and sports leagues are actually aware of this disappearing audience and the reason. Are they in denial about it? Or do they realize it and not care? In either case, their full immersion in the woke echo chamber makes them incapable of understanding how anyone could possibly have a political view different from their own.
