I can tell you from being a close friend of Ray McCallum, that he was very lightly recruited out of high school and BSU may have been his only D1 offer. Tony Contanzerite, owner of Tony’s Locker Room and a friend of Steve Yoder, talked Coach Yoder into offering Ray a scholarship. I honestly can’t remember the impact Ray even had on BSU his freshman year. I only remember him finishing his career with a bang leading BSU to NCAA tournament double overtime loss to Boston College. Ray was a virtually unknown player that averaged around 10 points a game his senior year before leading Muncie Central to a state championship in 1978 weighing 135 pounds, but running a beautiful 4 corners Bill Harrell offense in the state tournament.

I think five things can help get more people in the arena: (1) WIN; (2) Market the damn program; (3) Development of Sparks, a local area player as our Big Man; (4) Development of local area player Luke Brown as our point/go to player; (5) New Coach!

I’ve been watching Indiana HS basketball for over 60 years and I’ve never seen a better point guard than Luke Brown. I never saw Oscar Robertson play however. Oscar Robertson? He is one of the top 5 players ever in Indiana, just a really great basketball player. Luke Brown was a top 10 player last year. Big difference. First, it's somewhat embarrassing to this board that Oscar Robertson is even mentioned in the Luke Brown thread. Second, I'm wondering what corner of Indiana HS basketball logan has confined himself to for 60 years. And with Luke being the best in 60 years and all, maybe logan could favor us with some predictions as to Luke's production this year and future years. Points? Assists? Surely the best Indiana point guard in 60 years will be piling up huge numbers at the MAC level? And, Oscar top 5? Couldn't we say top 2? I think Larry Bird is the only one who could be possibly considered a peer of Oscar.

George McGinnis, Greg Oden, Shawn Kemp and Glenn Robinson all had big careers, but they aren't on the same level as Bird or Oscar Robertson.

I'd settle for another Peyton Stovall at this point.

Ray scored 463 points as a freshman, a program record eventually surpassed by Bonzi at 474. Ray was 2nd team All-MAC as a frosh and Freshman of the Year in the conference. Three-time 1st team after that and POY in 1983. You're correct that Ray was a totally under-the-radar recruit given he never played on the 1978 team. He led the Bearcats to the 1979 crown from total obscurity. Heart of a lion in a 5-9 frame.

Great information on Ray’s freshman year and beyond. Please keep in mind I said Brown is the best point guard I have personally watched play in Indiana. Players mentioned like Larry Bird, George McGinnis etc. were not point guards. I can’t predict how many points Brown will average his freshman year, but he will run the offense and find the open man with his incredible passing ability. We have plenty of guys that can shoot the ball and we need a point guard that doesn’t turn the ball over like our guards do. Yes, Brown can score and has 30 feet range, but he is a completely team player that simply makes others better. He will do whatever it takes to win a game and he is not concerned about anything else. That’s what great point guards do and that’s what Ray did when he played for BSU.

I hope you're right. As for now, there are several former guards from east central Indiana that we can only hope Luke transforms into----McCallum, Leavell (Allan or Ricky), Clemens, Hosier, Petey Jackson, etc. All that said, if there's no surrounding cast, or any kind of game plan, well....

Outstanding player, but sane people do not put him on the same level as Bird and Oscar. I didn't. Mount was a good outside shooter, didn't rebound or assist and played very little defense. Is this a correct assessment? Is this more like Luke Brown?

Blackford people will come out to see him. That should increase our attendance by dozens. Unless, of course, we set up a meth concession stand... I think you're confusing Blackford County with Henry County or Randolph County. Blackford County is a fine county full of beautiful people. I was born there, both sides of my family go way back there, and I'm related somehow to probably the majority of people who live there. An influx from Hartford would definitely class up the arena.

There is absolutely no comparison between Rick Mount and Luke Brown. To begin with, Rick Mount was not a point guard, he was a 2 guard or in Mount’s case, an amazing shooting guard that loved to shoot off the dribble fading away in the corner. Mount was basically a great shooter period. Brown is a point guard. I am perplexed with all the people that are so concerned about his physicality and his defense. Brown is a workaholic and was up every morning last summer working in the weight room. He has good quickness and an extremely quick first step. He is also shoots over 90% from the free throw line and the guy BSU will want at the line with the game on the line. I don’t want to take anything away from Rick Mount who was a great player at Purdue, however he and Brown are two completely different players beginning with they play different positions.

I just hope Brown can even somewhat live up to the expectations. Kinda not fair to have him be as built up as he has been and he’s not even officially in school yet.
