You’ve missed all the marketing ny the athletics dept. re: brown then. Rob wasn’t referring to Whitford specifically.

That may all be true but when your passing the ball to guys who struggle to make layups then it's not going to help That’s kinda what I was getting at. Brown could be Isaiah Thomas, but if the guys around him can’t play at a winning level on a consistent basis then we still don’t have anything. Sure. But adding a good player can help. And a lot of what you are saying is that we still don't at what level this team can play at its best. The coaches and staff say they were making progress but have had a bad game at Xavier and I think that leaves all of us in doubt where they are and what their level can be.
If you want to look at their worst game and be frustrated I am right with you. If you say that is who they are and all they can be, I think that is as bad as spinning them as conference contenders. .
Where they will be by conference tourney? Can Luke help them as part of an improved team? That's not an outrageous idea.

Tell me what you are seeing? I get the emails and see the Star-Press coverage, are you talking about something else then?
I'd guess the coaches are not happy about it. Kind of helpless about it. Coaches have to be part of the marketing, we even criticize Whitford for not doing more in that area, but they never want to go too far.

I too have missed any Brown promotions that I would regard as out of the ordinary for a new player. Where are you guys seeing this? I went to the official BSU BB website and saw only the one video.
That video could not be regarded as a super hype job, given that it featured a 30 second interview with Whitford that put me to sleep four times before I could finish it.

Whitford might think about hiring himself out as a spokesman for politicians embroiled in an active scandal. Let's say the governor of some state was caught on video sexually molesting baby animals in a petting zoo. If he hired Whitford, and sent him out to do a press conference on the matter, the media members who remained awake would quickly decide the story was too boring to pursue any further, and they would all move on to the next story.

I'm talking about the social media posts directly from the team. I Don't remember them all. One said something about coming home others have said other things. Point is it has never happened with any other recruit since I've been following it. Every other recruit in every sport has always gotten the standard stock photo general press type posting.

They really say Messiah? What else?
I don't follow Twitter but it doesn't surprise me it's different than past recruits with the local whiz kid.
Other things are different too. We have the IU guy, Comar, directing BB operations, not sure he's responsible for the Twitter feed but he is team liason for the website.
Wonder what they've been ordered by AD.

It has the feel of, “OMG, he’s eligible! The legend is eligible.!” That’s the vibe more than one of us has felt.

Here's one... shortly after signing there are several others I'll find later. It's just weird, odd and does not happen anywhere with any recruit.

This really is not meant to or can't be argued. It just does not happen anywhere. You can find fan made videos but this is team issued. It's not a highlight film it's a production.

Maybe not quite in the same discussion, but I bet Whitford would be a 4 star recruit as a professional filibusterer.

It's very noticeable though that they are milking it for all its worth I don't like it particularly but that part sort of makes sense to me with a program in financial distress needing every paid attendance possible.

1) BSU is currently 306th in defensive efficiency. I don't think even Brown's most fervent fanboys would claim he's going to help the defense, and you don't win much of anything with the 306th best defense in the country.
2) Is there any way Bumbalough and Brown can play at the same time? I would be surprised. Too similar in profile. Too weak of a defensive backcourt. Bumbalough is currently BSU's most productive offensive player, so it's going to be interesting.
3) How will Brown look when somebody who is taller, heavier AND quicker than him picks him up at half court EVERY time he dribbles up court, EVERY game. This is a much different challenge than being double or even triple teamed by equal or lessor athletes.
4) there seem to be some reasons to be excited about Brown but yet college recruiters were just not all that excited. This is a good test for my preference for using the quality of scholarship-offering programs as my main means of evaluating recruits.
5) I think we've all seen enough bad-to-mediocre basketball around here to recognize very clearly where this team was headed. Something like a 6th to 9th place MAC finish with no post season chance. Brown is at least a different sort of player, so maybe he adds at least a little uncertainty and therefore hope into an what is otherwise another dismal and inevitable slog to nowhere.
6) We've talked about this quite a bit and now it's going to be very interesting to see what numbers actually come down Hwy 3 to the arena.
