Someone made the point that Cronin wouldn’t have tweeted his Michael Lewis promo without Lewis’ knowledge. This is almost certainly true. Hell Lewis probably wrote the tweet and asked Cronin to post. It’s all wrong until it’s right! lol Totally agree, 100%. Cronin would surely not toss Lewis out there as a BSU candidate unless Lewis told him he would like to take the BSU job. I would be really pleased if Lewis turned out to be the guy. Some have expressed concerns that Lewis might bail out on BSU when the Butler job opens, but you know what? That is OK with me. I'd much rather have a year or two or three of really good coaching than 6 or 7 years of mediocre coaching if we hired a lesser candidate. How can we reestablish a strong tradition if we don't bring in a strong coach, even knowing that their tenure might be short? Let's get the momentum going forward rather than just treading water. Let's hope for Lewis, hopefully bring Botts back in as an assistant, and we will be going in the right direction.

They need to get someone soon or there will not be a team to coach. I have a hard time believing that any of these guys in the portal could ever really believe Whitless could lead the team to success. He had a losing record in all games and an even worse conference losing record. Players never really grew during their time at BSU. Just can’t believe they fell for his bull that much, especially seeing failure year after year.

Did Ball State name an interim coach? I thought after letting Billy Taylor go, they named Mickey Hosier of basketball operations an interim position. Likely to keep the team together. Seems like a good idea to have a body in that position.
Go Cards!

With portal that holding the team together a lot harder.
Can't blame Whitford or the AD or anybody else for that.

The "portal" doesn't do anything, it's just a slightly modified process for public consumption ? The "portal" has always existed, it just didn't have a name.

That probably means he has no shot at head coach - I would agree he is not ready.

I feel like if you and 00hmh would book a pay-per-view no holds barred MMA style event preceded by a one hour press conference debate that we could sell enough on this board to hire anyone we wanted for the basketball opening. I'd drop fifty on it now. Plus the betting. I need Rob to make this match.

So driving home from work this afternoon, I'm listening to Indy sports talk radio. A caller who IDs himself as being from Muncie says there is a lot of community support for Bonzi to be the next coach.
On one had it would be nice if the community cared at all about the BSU program. But does anyone have any idea if Bonzi would actually have any traction for the job, or interest in it?
He IS one of those lower division coaches that has been talked about, but hardly successful at the level of others mentioned. I think he was 16-12 this year at LeMoyn-Owens

As Mills has noted, all the names I'm seeing on this board are of the standard, typical, conventional variety. And, of course, it's extremely doubtful that Goetz has the vision, creativity or confidence to look outside that kind of pool. BSU's financial limitations dictate that BSU will have to settle for one of the lesser conventional candidates, because they will be outbid for the better ones. Not a terribly inspiring situation but still better than the known failure of Whitford. Who would be a few examples of unconventional candidates? Personally I mostly want to target candidates that have prior HC experience, something Whitford didn't have. Even if that experience is at a lower level than D1. I would throw out these such names (not knowing that any of them are interested or not): Small College - Currently Winning Head Coach - some background to Indiana or nearbyAndy Bronkema - Ferris State (191 wins in 8 seasons, 6 tourney appearances, MAC footprint connections) Jimmy Elgas - Henderson State (enthusiastic guy with only 1 losing season in 7 years, former assistant at Evansville, Kansas St, Utah) Scott Heady - Marian U. (112 wins in 5 seasons, grew up 40 minutes from BSU, state champ HS coach, could bring along Jesse McClung-former BSU player who is current asst coach Kyle Smithpeters - John A. Logan Jr College-Harrisburg IL (223 wins in 9 seasons, 8 straight with 20+ wins, just 40 yrs old, knowing the JC scene could turn BSU around quick?) Greg Tonagel - Indiana Wesleyan (just up the road from BSU, 448 wins, 12 regular season championships, 4x ranked #1 nationally NAIA, state of Indiana lifer) Women's Head CoachAustin Parkinson - IUPUI Women (Kokomo native, basketball family, some IUPUI influential folks wanted hired as their mens coach, 224 wins incl. 7 of last 8 full yrs w/20+, 2 NCAA appear) High School Head CoachRyan Osborn - Carmel HS (Logansport native, played at IUPUI, 109 wins in 5 years, only 2 post-season losses in career, could bring along Josh McRoberts who's currently a Carmel asst.) Guys Who Need a Redemptive Second Chance - who likely couldn't be real choosySteve Wojochewoski - fired at Marquette in 2021, heavy Duke background Gregg Marshall - fired at Wichita State in 2020, enormous prior D-1 success Other?Greg Gary- current Mercer head coach 51-43 in 3 yrs (native of Anderson, longtime asst at Purdue - maybe a lateral or downward move, but might want to come back to Indiana)

Heard that too. My first thought was, not really. Maybe after we fire our next coach! How about he builds an attractive resume first. Good players aren't always good coaches. I present to you Isiah Thomas.

It's funny that, with BSU needing a coach, it just did not occur to me to think of a guy whose jersey (legitimately) hangs in the rafters, and who is actually a current head coach at the college level. Funny and telling.
Also:
"Steve Wojochewoski - fired at Marquette in 2021,"
Fired at Marquette? HIRE HIM RIGHT NOW!!!

Really, that needed school permission AND sitting out. Have you thought this through? If it isn't easier why are we seeing more transfer activity? By far? The rule changes have been implemented over the last decade and have nothing to do with the term "portal". There were 829 portal transfers in 2015 compared with 1013 in 2020, there are currently 529 athletes in this years portal. Last season there were 1729 transfers, but the number is greatly skewed because everyone was awarded an extra year and it was the first year no one had to sit out. The numbers will settle back down this year, even though we are still working the extra year through the system. There is not some massive explosion in transfers.
