Entering portal. Says he has not closed the door on returning to BSU but you have to assume the interest he will generate will make the decision to stay very unlikely. Very unfortunate

Sparks is good but is undersized to play the #5 in my view in a b5 conference and the #4 is not his natural position. He should stay in place to be All MAC 1st team and win the league. Someone has gotten into his head which is a damn shame! Wait to see who the new Coach is???!!! How did the portal work for KJ, El Amin or Zach Gunn?  ? |

Read his tweet. Loved every minute of this season at BSU. Testing the water since he doesn't know who the new coach will be.
He's going to get interest but this tells me the right coach can pull him back.
I think it is a logical choice. If we hire a shmuck he's better off elsewhere.

These kids need to at least wait to meet the new coach once he's hired. If at that point they still want to bail, leave.
I'm not sure he wasn't gonna do this no matter what.

My understanding is that by being in the portal they can contact and be contacted by other schools. With the coach being an unkown, this is a very logical and smart move. He can check out other possibilities and then make an informed decision when the new coach is chosen.

Interesting he didn't mention Darner in his post even though he was his position coach with Whit. Botts was part of the recruitment. Payton loves Ball State and everything I heard is that he's a creature of habit. Indiana is home and he's close with his parents. Did see him run over and embrace Whit at the end of the WMU game. Think they had a good relationship. |

I agree that it is the smart decision for him. I also have heard a lot about how he loves bsu and was happy here so hopefully we have a chance. I just don’t know how long this coaching search will take.
Kid- I agree that 4 is not his natural position and that he is a bit undersized for a power 5 school. I would think schools like butler, Xavier (just lost their coach today so they might be having to hit the portal hard), Dayton, northwestern may be interested and are all pretty close to home.

How can you compare him to Gunn?! Everything we have seen, tells us he can learn the 4. He's got the basketball IQ, is a workhouse and straight up baller. Crazy that he came in at 18. Only going to get bigger, in a good way. This board has been talking about the risk of him transferring. What are the odds someone got into his head, as opposed to him just wanting to explore options he knows he has? Seems smart to me, but fingers crossed he stays! |

If we lose sparks and others it will suck, HOWEVER, the next coach will hit the portal all the same and bring in new talent. Its how the world works now.
