Just rambling...
Kids entering the portal every March might be the norm now every time there is a coaching change, personality conflict, lack of playing time or shot attempts...
I just don't want to stumble through an IUPUI type of first year.
It will take a few years of dealing with the transfer portal to see how bad it will affect the mid major level. Good coaches will adapt and overcome. After all, every player taken through the portal at the high major level means there is scholarship that didn't go to a high school player.
If I were to guess, most competitive mid major teams will resemble Toledo, with guard heavy rosters and small forwards playing in the paint.

In trying to think if a good acronym but the portal is going to kill you one day and save you the next. Any freshman that explodes on a mid major is gone. You might keep a kid who gradually gets better. From here on out coaches who can work the portal are going to win

Many of us saw tge kid play multiple highschool games. What we saw there and then saw from game 1 here is not even the same kid

Maybe the right approach is take the "one and done" tact with kids, understanding that super stars will move on and that your roster will be overhauled each season. Adapt and overcome... Accept change and embrace it. "That which does not kill you, makes you stronger"...

The other option and it will be done at some schools is not recruit highschool kids at all. You can see what your getting from the portal instead of projecting what a high school kid might br

So then the highschool kids are forced to go prep school or just. The portal will create a minor league system of sorts

Promise talented kids they will be featured with the open/spoken understanding they won't be here long. Ride the bench at Butler for a year or get featured for 35 minutes a game at Ball State so you can get the attention of IU (for example).

The mids are now looking at fringe p5 starters or bench players and asking themselves what can this kid bring against our level or you see Cochran type lateral transfers where you might nab a kid from a conference foe

And there will be kids like sparks who make that move and you never hear from them again. Some will make it but most will probably wish they would have stayed put

From here on out e othercoaches who can work the portal are going to win Minor league BB is OK, but you never gain relative to the big boys, you only can cut losses. Constantly losing your A+ talent and rebuilding means you are VERY rarely going to be really good. That takes holding talent a more than a year even if you àre very good at getting high major castoffs who are over recruited and choose to move down. Many of the best in that category will move laterally. No Bonzi, or TSmith other mainstay. Maybe a McCurdy or Kidd or lesser hits in the portal who thrive is possible, but leave soon as grad transfers. Coaching changes too, I fear, I don't want to embrace AAU style college basketball. But. That could be our new world. And should you get a good coach, his leaving less likely to mean his successor holds the gains he made. We'll see how it works but this is not likely good news for mid major basketball.

I don't think he is ready but I think you could keep everyone if Botts were to be named head coach. It would probably fail but everyone loves him NO!

Rob, I had Sparks being a stud before the season ever started but I do not think he’ll start at IU, Oklahoma, etc in his Sophomore year! Play yes, start no.
