I took a couple things away from the interview. He showed more emotion and likeability in 5 minutes than Whit did in 10 years. My biggest concern is this guy seems the exact opposite of Whit. I'm a bit concerned that our very liberal president and AD may clash with our Busch light drinking dude who seems ready to kick some ass. If they can coexist then I think we have a chance i love it, have a night where we pass out Busch lights to the student section

The man is excited to get to the go to the Indy 500 live and be back in Indiana so he doesn’t have to special order Bush light in Calabasas” my maaan!! But in all seriousness, great interview in all aspects, not just basketball. His last remark was probably the biggest one to me “I’m very comfortable in who I am, I know exactly who I am, I know where I’m from and I’m not changing. If you don’t like this were probably not gonna work” All aboard the Micheal Lewis train!!!! I also enjoyed “the worst thing you can say about me as a coach is my team is soft”…. Culture change incoming! I bet one things for sure with Lewis and that is when he says “We played the right way” that it will have a competently different meaning than that of Whitford’s!!!

This season will likely be ugly. He is saying the right things, but getting them done is a lot harder.

This season will likely be ugly. He is saying the right things, but getting them done is a lot harder. Well said. IF key players return. And have improved. IF we add a good group recruiting. If a staff comes together. If he has only a little trouble making a transition as a HC. Then maybe not. The relationship with administration isn't likely a big problem. The relationship with realities like academics, discipline, new administrative load, budget and so on will be. Any coach has to handle that. He's seen it before, He'll have a grace period. Probably even with fans...

Next year will really depend on whether he can keep the players in the portal (I’m ok if Cochran leaves). Many felt like this years team had enough talent to finish above .500 with good coaching & some discipline on offense. IF Sparks & Sellers stay and IF he can add a good player or two, I think we’ll see an above .500 squad in ‘22-23.

A wildcard could be is there a current ucla bench player that might want to follow Lewis and be a starter here

Cochran might be just the exact sort of player that would benefit most from a coach emphasizing toughness. A potentially very tough and physical player who whas played in the environment of two soft, bad teams, and gravitated away from his true strengths. Hard to say if Cochran himself would see things this way.

One of the statements Lewis made yesterday was “we not that far off” and getting the guys to believe they can win a championship is part of the job. He sees the potential, he wants to win 5-7 more possessions a game than we did this past season and we’re competing for a championship and a bid. Easier said than done, of course. And he mentioned toughness multiple times.
We need better guard play (as long as he can get Sparks to stay). Better guard play with Sparks can bump us up several spots. We’ll see how the guys who come back buy in.
