A wildcard could be is there a current ucla bench player that might want to follow Lewis and be a starter here This "opportunity" might not be limited to UCLA. Good chance Lewis has a "short list" of high major bench players who he's heard aren't happy not playing and would welcome the chance to start at a Mid-Major. The stuff good coaches in the MAC like Groce have been doing for years. Not the next to worthless Grad Transfers Whitford always ended-up with.

I have drank my share of Busch Light but changed back to my old favorite PBR after they started making it again. Interview showed that he is a leader and doesn't beat around the Busch. He also likes the 500 which is close to my heart. I have been to over 60 500 mile races.

I suppose we were spared a bidding war by the same reasons that made it take so long for Lewis to get a head coaching job while being an assistant for so many years. I have no idea what those reasons were....but they temper my enthusiasm for the hire, whatever they might have been. Still, I'm about a hundred thousand times more optimistic than I would have been if we'd kept Whitford...so there's that. I 114% agree with you that my enthusiasm is extremely high and although it has been at the START of a couple of recent seasons, I'm optimistic that it can carry forward. You guys are all more astute and searching the web about things, but do we know Lewis had pursued and been past over for other head coaching jobs ?

Lewis has a pretty obvious emphasis on imparting toughness to his team. I like that myself, but it certainly isn't very much in fashion these days. He sounds like a coach from, say, 40 or 50 years ago. Dick Hunsaker was like that, and he seemed a bit old fashioned even in the early '90's. (Dick's record speaks for itself, of course).
So, I wonder if that's what caused Lewis to be passed over so often? I hope so.
I have to say that, assuming our impression is correct, that this is about the last type of coach I would have predicted Goetz and Mearns to hire. I get so tired of being right all the time about BSU basketball. Nice to have a break from that.

I love that Lewis is already active on Twitter and on the local recruiting scene.

Thanks for sharing! Great stuff!! The guy gets it!! It will be very interesting to see who he brings on staff. You can tell he believes in himself and there is no bullshit. I am looking forward to seeing how he approaches his first recruiting class. Will he be aggressive and offer kids that are high major potential, Or will he concentrate on diamonds in the rough. The next couple of months are going to be very interesting and fun!! This is the most excited I have been for BSU basketball in a long, long time.

Great interviews. This guy seems to have the potential to be a really good coach as well as a spokesman for Ball State’s men’s basketball.

Guys I realize that there is a lot of euphoria right now but we need to reflect on the wisdom of one of our most prolific posters. He has reminded us year after year that trying to find a new coach is risky, this job is not very desirable, we can't pay well enough, no guarantee we'll be any better off, fans won't come back, basketball isn't that important in our town anymore, we don't have any money, the admin won't support it, and we are better off just enjoying whatever result comes along. (Disclaimer: these may not be exact quotes but they're pretty f*#king close).
So before you get too excited just remember the MAC titles and NCAA appearances never really happened and we never dominated the league so don't expect anything resembling that. Good news for Coach Lewis...you've got at least one fan who will give you a ten year window to build this back up.

Good news for Coach Lewis...you've got at least one fan who will give you a ten year window to build this back up. Yup. According to him most other MAC fanbases would be thrilled with what Whitford accomplished and that we are all demanding way too much to even hope for accomplished akin to Sallees women's teams given our staff budget. That's funny because on the FB MAC page I've seen multiple toledo fans call for Kowalchyks head for losing to MAC East teams in Cleveland and hes been way more successful than Whit ever was. I know 00 would say its a bad comparison Toledo pays him way more than what Whitford made, it's always about $ with 00 and that's true but I honestly think the only fanbase that would of tolerated 9 yr of mostly mediocrity sprinkled in with a few above average and awful seasons are NIU fans. They know their football program will always be 7 steps ahead of bball.
