I agree he's a risk.
But QB in the SEC and a consensus top 10 choice, it's not quite fair to say he can't pass...
It's the whole running QB thing and the RPO offense which I suppose may "run it's course" or may be with us and change the NFL some.

Was a little surprised they took a chance on Richardson, while passing up more of a "sure thing" with Levis.
I thought the Bucs would snag Levis, but the scouts around the league must know something we don't. He slid all the way out of the first round. They must have read my "Jeff George 2.0" post.
I think Richardson will start early in the season. I'd start him game 1, and tell him not to worry about incompletions and picks, just go out and learn. Simplify the playbook, and add as the season progresses. Ask a little more from him each game. Teach him when to throw it away. Don't let him run too much at first. Learn to play under control, and do the little things well.
Bring him along in year 1, and year 2 can be crazy good.

Arrogant like this?
That’s when Manning let Polian know his rather pointed position.
“He told me, ‘If you pick me, I guarantee you that we will win a championship and we’ll have a great program here,’” Polian recalled Manning saying. “If you don’t, I’ll come back and I’ll kick your butt.”
Polian then added, “He didn’t say ‘butt.’”
There is clearly something going on with Levis, but I don't think "arrogance" is it.

"We will win a championship" is one thing. That's not arrogant, that's confident.
"I will win a championship" would be arrogant.
When Levis bragged about having a "cannon for an arm", that's when alarm bells started going off for me.
The Texans trading back up to grab the #3 spot was ballsy, but it sure cost them. Given the penchant for ineptitude in Houston, I don't see it panning out, and saddles them with fewer draft picks next year.

As opposed to Ballard's moves, which have resulted in so much on field success

I don't know but telling a GM you're going to kick his team's ass seems to me a bit more arrogant than (accurately) referring to your arm as a cannon.

You have to think about getting the rest of the team back in synch before throwing a massive random variable into the mix. The defense was awfully frustrated last year seeing a QB fail when they played a good game. The team could use a little mediocre at that position against any weaker opponent. If it isn't going to freak the rest of the team, even early there have to be reps he can get.
If the backup is playing well and the first few opponents represents games the Colts can win with solid backup in the lineup, that seems the right thing. OTOH if game management isn't going to win late in the game why not throw the kid in and roll the dice.
Any way you look at it they will be putting an inordinate amount of time into this project in practice, and I can't see not using him at all. Just maybe not trotting him out to throw an interception the first series and digging a hole.

I'm pretty sure in the back of Polian's mind he knew that Manning had the goods to back it up. Levis is not in that same category of QB, so there is that. Not sure that Richardson's 13 starts at Florida, showed anyone, anything either.

Whats so hard to understand about the necessity to pass to win in the NFL? Of course. The discussion I am seeing is that there is a scenario where you use the run to give him a chance to get the pass opportunities he seems to have down best. He can throw it downfield.
He has not shown touch and timing on short passes, but the other team can't just crowd the line and defend only the short pass as they have been able to do in recent years when they could count on catching up to the QB quickly with pass rush.
He has done well on plays where those last few Colts QB's failed miserably. When he is running for his life he actually can escape, and he has a strong arm unlike Ryan, much more ability to break the pressure and throw it long, and much more ability to turn a scramble irun into a long gain than did Wentz or Ehlinger. Also no sign of panic throwing the ball to a nearby defensive player as did Wentz... When he gets creative it is to dodge and dart for an opening with the run.
The other idea is to take some time to learn the passing game since he can play the RPO on designed runs for the Colts RB should give him a lot of chances to do more worse than pull the ball out and run himself when the defense has to worry about a very good RB, and where they mirror the receivers and are coming after him.

No. www.espn.com/video/clip?id=28146160And Ryan Leaf never led the Wazzu Cougar Marching Band.

Ok, so you and mom and gf struck out on first round night and you ate up all the cheese and crackers in your sofa area….. do you show up tonight in a backup suit or just watch it on TV from the Hampton Inn?
Wouldn’t you think a little birdie would have whispered something in your agent’s ear indicating a pretty keen interest before dragging the family to KC?

Pretty clear that the Colts will rival the Bears for the worst passing attack in the league for the next few years at least. This is about the most certain way possible to get high future draft picks. So there's that to look forward to.

The last three games last year the Colts were pathetic but for most of the season, they were just bad. Not in the Bears league.
Colts also improved their receivers a bit. They were essentially playing a backup QB last year. I'll remain optimistic that the rookie can get on the field and be better than that by the end of the year. There are more than a few teams competing with the Bears for worst passing attack.
