I think the end of the Lynch era(s) at ball state is (are) long overdue. If my quick calculation is correct, Ball State now has 27 Coaching Years invested in the Lynch family. They have profited quite well for the little ROI the university has received.

If Steele can’t go vs Miami we’re toast for sure. But Neu didn’t seem real interested in working and back up RB’s in and giving them a decent amount of carries and give Steele more breaks.

So it's 32-18 with a minute to go. Do you play the backup QB not us. Oh and our QB has a bad shoulder. What is our coach thinking?

I wasn't able to watch until the end of the game. What happened to Steele? He got hurt in the 2nd quarter and did not return. Had 2 lost fumbles on big hits, the second one took him out. Maybe concussion? He was walking ok so it didn’t look like lower body was the problem.

At least we didn't lose the way Toledo lost. Complete collapse at the end.

At least we didn't lose the way Toledo lost. Complete collapse at the end. We’re all familiar with painful losses, but in my experience the “trailing big all game but taking a lead at the very end only to have the other team complete a 75 yard drive in 40 seconds” is the most painful way to lose. We did that to IU under Lembo. We led all game but IU took the lead at the very end a we kicked a long fg with 1 second left to snatch the victory back. That was a fun win.

We are maddeningly inconsistent and always seem to find ways NOT to make a play when we really need it and our opponents find a way to make a play when they need it. It's a losing formula we've seen for all but one of Neu's teams. It doesn't feel like the sloppiness, poor discipline in play and lack of playmakers is ever going to change. We had opportunities to win the division and failed to capitalize on every one of them in our losses. Neu talks a good game, but at this point it's VERY evident they can't consistently coach a good game. Slow starts are common, we can't throw the ball when we can run it and we can't run it when we can throw it. We can't seem to find balance and have both parts of the offense work at the same time. If we're not fumbling it or throwing interceptions we're dropping key passes or missing the target by 5 yards. If we're not doing those things we're committing really bad penalties at the worst times. In game 11. with a young team you can understand we'd be all over the play in the first third of the season, but we fall apart in the last 3rd when we should be putting it all together. Why does that happen every year? COACHING and not find a way to get your playmakers on the field, making plays. We'll see a bunch of players on offense leave again after this season. Why? Because they never see the field, even if they're more talented than the guys ahead of them. They see no future in this offense and this system of coaching. You can bet some WR's and some QB's will leave. Paddock will be the QB again next year and that doesn't generate much optimism and excitement. Great kid, fierce leader, too damn limited in ability. There's just no there, there.
We will not beat Miami. We're done, especially if Steele can't play. We did nothing to keep our back ups ready to go and contribute and they got nothing done when he went out. (and hey, how bout that play call to just run it up the gut from 3 yards deep in the endzone on that safety?) The oline is merely decent. Steele gets most of his yards on his own. Evidently no one else we have can do it. And when Steele is in that's pretty much the offense. Obviously they don't trust Paddock to get the ball downfield so we just don't make much effort in the pass game when we can hand it to Carson. When we HAVE to throw Paddock can suddenly make a few things happen, but he cannot usually make THE winning throws when it comes down to it. He makes every throw a 50/50 ball rather than putting the ball in places where the WR's can easily bring it in. Seems like the DB's get a hand in there on every throw. And, our WR's apparently don't have much fight, or is it much strength or athleticism because they are unable to win on any 50/50 balls. (except Tyler IF it's a pass in the endzone) The defense was ill prepared for the option last night. Guys who took the pitch man were throwing their hands up in exasperation as they watched NO ONE take the QB, or vice versa. Not a great effort by the D last night, but then again, they are put in untenable positions by a really bad offense. The DB's were out of position on just about everything.
Yes, I'm ranting in frustration this morning. While last night didn't feel like in terms of the vibe, our other MAC losses were wins just sitting there for us to take and we refused to do it, so once again we're down to the last game to try to get that 6th win. When we could be sitting on at least 7 wins already. So, I expect not much success against Miami. They have Neu's number anyway. Can't seem to get it done against them. Betting Paddock throws at least two picks if not 3, and if there's no Steele we again rush for less than 100 yards. And then watch guys bail for chances to play elsewhere, or, in a few cases, get NIL money at better programs. Off season could be very interesting and the staff could be scrambling to get some transfers to fill spots that unexpectedly open up. Hopefully no more recruits bail. We're gonna need some portal and Juco transfers at some key spots since apparently we don't like who we already have and refuse to play them. Yes, coming into the season I felt 5 wins was the ceiling, with 6 being a surprisingly good year, but that all changed once I saw what we SHOULD have been able to accomplish. Now it's just a disappointment.

BSU is 0-3 vs. the Rourke brothers. We have no clue how to play their option, plus those guys can complete a pass. And we missed Cole Pearce last night. That dude is everywhere and would have made some big tackles last night. Tackling, where, you know, we're supposed to take a guy to the ground, but don't. There was one play where AJ pretty much took a dive rather than attempt a tackle out on the boundary.

I was not really disappointed about last night. Just resigned to the fact they are not a bad team but not a good either. Hashtag meh.
I really liked the DJ last night also.

Agree with this assessment, Cardfan. I'll join you in the rant. There are many things in football that are uncontrollable (weather, injuries, etc.) But we are consistently losing over the controllables. Last night was a perfect example in a lot of ways-we apparently discovered our tight ends could catch the ball but only after we were down double digits, Steele was out and we were forced to pass the ball. The bill came due for leaning on one guy for offense all season. The D looked exhausted from being behind the eight ball all season. But Neu/Lynch will not change their approach, no matter what it costs them in terms of mediocre records and departures. We don't know what other players can do because they flat-out refuse to play them even though apparently some of them are doing really well in practice. There is a ton of experience graduating this year and that's before we see who will enter the portal. (I would add RB's to the list of positions where there is going to be kids leaving.) Other MAC programs are surpassing us and I agree that when you consistently have these kinds of issues COACHING and PHILOSOPHY is indeed the problem. All the stuff you point out-slow starts, bad penalties in critical situations, INT's, is all a reflection of coaching. But Neu talks such a good game that even he believes it. Any leader who keeps having performances like this ought to do some real evaluating but he simply won't and is not being compelled to. It's high time that somebody who is always talking about accountability start taking some for himself.

I've been anticipating Barfield leaving since he was completely buried early on. I'm not counting on steele returning because he can get a nice NIL deal elsewhere. I would think Pemberton stays because he'll very likely be getting most of the carries, assuming Steele does go. Beyond that there's not much in the RB room other than walk ons.
Kelly will leave. I can see Magwood leaving. Etc. etc.
I hope this all doesn't cause the team to implode. I hope the discontent is individual and not team wide. I do think Neu has created a strong culture. He just seems too stubborn to evolve or hire an offensive coordinator who lives in the now. The best MAC teams have diverse offenses with weapons--weapons they actually use. Playmakers at WR. Speed/homerun hitters at RB. QB's who can making winning throws in crunch time or make plays with their feet. (we have refused to give that a try) Paddock is a statue and too small and too inaccurate. Even many of his completions are not conducive to running after the catch. The best teams use the whole field and not just between the tackles. Their play design is such that WR's actually run open in space. All the stuff we don't or can't do. How can we attract difference making players at WR if we can't get them the ball in a position to make a play or won't throw it more than 6 yards at a time? Do we even bother recruiting and using RB's who can actually run wide and stretch out a defense? Who can take it the distance if they get a decent sized hole to run through? Running a ball control offense even when you're down two scores just won't cut it. Nor will doing crap like running right up the gut out of the end zone with an inexperienced back and no blocking. Thinking and reacting out of the box just isn't something we're able to do.
How many more wins would we have if Neu/Lynch stayed with getting the ball to the TE's early and often and not just after the game is harder to win? Could we not have capitalized on those two studs in the EMU game? The Toledo game? Instead we kept running Steele into brick walls and asked Paddock to complete passes out to the boundary and it just didn't/doesn't work. We're way too easy to defend and too predictable. We should have been able to absolutely light defenses up with play action given how Steele can run. Did we even try play action and misdirection? Not much. Instead it's, well, Steele only got 2 yards running left, let's run the same play running right. If that doesn't get us enough lets have Paddock throw passes 3 yards short of the line to gain. Or let's have him throw on 3rd and 2 when Steele is rolling and can get that two and have the pass miss the target by a lot.
I would like to know WHY Neu and his staff refuse to play guys who maybe should get a shot. There've been reports from practice of Kelly killing our defense when he's running scout plays. We heard preseason that Barfield and Magwood were going to factor in. Loyalty is great up till it costs you football games. I wish the beat reporter would dig deeper and ask tough questions but then I'm sure Mike would just brush off with cliches and platitudes and "we're playing the guys who give us the best change to win" even as we aren't winning. And he'd just keep repeating the "we just gotta get some things cleaned up and we're gonna get started on that in practice tomorrow."
Oh well. Here's to another off season of what if and waiting to see who we lose from the roster. Hopefully basketball actually meets or exceeds expectations.
