I loved the fact that we held Cochran to 5 points and 3 rebounds; he was basically the 6th man for Toledo but a non factor

A random game summary/thoughts post from Toledo/BSU game thread; take it for what it's worth. or something:
"If you would have told me before the game tonight that Toledo would score 83 points, shoot 51% from the field and have only 4 turnovers, I would have felt very confident that they had won. But I forgot this Toledo team does not defend very well and the result was a 7 point loss to a very good Ball State team. The loss can be attributed to the following: (1) We could not defend Ball State’s two transfers, Coleman and Jacob who combined for 51 points and hurt us from both the perimeter and attacking the basket. (2) Even without their Big Man Sparks being a major factor tonight, Ball St destroyed us on the boards 41-21 and resulted in their getting 13 second chance points to 0 for Toledo. It seemed like every time Toledo would come up with a rare defensive stop, Ball St would come down with an offensive rebound and score on the same possession. Despite the loss, I will give Toledo credit for making comebacks from double digits late in both halves, but they dug themselves to deep a hole to come out of against a quality opponent like Ball St. After 14 games, it looks like Toledo is going to be in a lot of high scoring games and will need their offense to carry them to victories. Whether that recipe will work come tournament time, it is far from certain".

Something that I didn't see mentioned here that really won't show up on the stat line much but was (IMHO) one of the keys to the game was the solid minutes from Owens White to buffer Jacobs and Sellers foul trouble. Dude just gave some clutch ball handling minutes, played decent defense, and scored a bucket. Could have really led to supplementing Toledo's comeback if he didn't make that steady contribution. If he can fill minutes and provide quality depth like that, it can only help...

One spot ahead if Vermont. Two spots behind Fort Wayne.

Really good guards usually means success in the MAC. We have three and finally have a coach who they believe in and most importantly one who will motivate and toughen them to play through adversity. At long last we have accountability to go along with expectations. We've replaced kumbaya with kick ass. Some folks didn't like Beth Goetz but she made some unbelievable coaching hires and didn't accept mediocrity and the results in so many of our programs is phenomenal. It's still very early in Coach Lewis' first year and 18 games or more to go, BUT he's the real deal so far and if he can recruit as well as he coaches he won't be here long which is the way of the world. BTW, he subbed out Sparks in the final 5 minutes against Chicago State too. No way you can have him in the game shooting 45 percent. This is not necessarily a genius coaching move but we have wandered in the wilderness for so long with lousy coaches that it feels like one. 🤣
Now, let's pack the house for Akron fellas. Students will not be back and this squad has earned a raucous home advantage. They are running a buy 1 get 2 special. Bring a couple friends and have a few beers before you get there and let's kick the Zips in the jimmies. Go Cards.👊

Impressive road victory. Side note... These announcers are so very depressed that Toledo is losing. Literally all night they have just been wanting that comeback. "Just goes to show you have to play a perfect game to beat Toledo here." His sum up at the end sounded so exasperated, I thought he was the UT radio announcer. Lol Agree these two were such homers especially the color guy, whom the play by guy referred to as “coach” so not sure if he coached Toledo prior or what but very evident that these two were all Toledo last night.

I think that "coach" announcer was a former coach at Maryland. Toledo is defending champ and has incredible talent. BSU basketball brought into Savage Arena 20 years of disrespect and so called wins against a weak schedule. This game hopefully will help get rid of some of this disrespect baggage.

Does anyone else believed Whit's team would have folded down the stretch? I believe if we had played Toledo earlier in the year we would have folded. We are learning mental toughness and how to close out games and win.

We are learning mental toughness and how to close out games and win. Absolutely we would not have won the game if Whit was still the coach. Bumbalough averaged something like 32-33 minutes per game last year. He was the guy Whit trusted. I believe he would still be playing similar minutes this year for Whit. Bumb just isn’t the same caliber as our three guards…Sellers, Jacobs & Coleman. I’m guessing we’d be sitting at 7-7 or maybe 8-6 under Whit.
