The coaches in the NCC were legends. Bill Green, Norm Held, Basil Mawbey, Dick Baumgartner, Sam Alford, Marion Crawley and of course Bill Harrell.
Green won six state championships at Marion and Indianapolis Washington. Bill Harrell won three at Muncie Central and one in Kentucky, the only coach to ever win in both basketball crazy states. Norm Held won 343 games at Anderson but could never win the State title finishing runner up four times. Old joke was they named 2nd street in Anderson after him. Mawbey won 550 games combined at several stops including a state title at Connersville. Crawley won 644 career games and four state championships, 2 each at Washington HS and Lafayette Jeff. Alford won 452 games but not a state title despite his son’s legendary career. Baumgartner won 350 games in only 20 years. Every one of these coaches is in the IHSAA Hall of Fame. What an era and what a conference it was.

High school basketball is such a wild thing. My daughters school is ranked #2 in Georgia, earlier this year they were #12 in the nation. 7 foot auburn commit, two years ago Scoot Henderson was a junior and then left HIGH school early for the g league. Have 5 guys that could play at Ball State (and Lewis should be recruiting this kid Jaylon Colon - he’s my neighbor, and dropped 12 threes in a game the other day - has a few lower D1 offers already as a junior).
Anyway - go to a game, there are less people there than when I was at a small Delaware county school in the late 80s. It is baffling.

The games at the Fieldhouse were unbelievable (the NCC games were wars) and caravanning to New Castle/Indy during the state tourney created great memories. What a time to be high school Indiana.

The 1988 run was so much fun. Those four weeks (almost ruined yet again by South in the sectionals) were a crazy ride. I don't think we did much of anything in most classes those last two weeks...

Single class basketball was glorious. And I went to a school with under 400 in the high school.
Winning the sectional was a huge deal. Going to the regional usually meant you got wiped out by a large school. A state title for us was never going to happen, but the excitement of seeing how far we could go... well, that was the best part.
Class basketball is the result of too many parents wanting trophies that they never got to win. It ruined what was a great thing.

Anderson High is on top of the NCC this year and Basil Mawbey is an assistant coach there. I think Phil Buck should be maybe an honorable mention in the list of great coaches. Anderson vs. Muncie Central 2/11 and Kokomo 2/17. Andersonrecord is 10-3 with losses to Pike, Noblesville and Carmel. on 1/17 they beat Marion 77-44.

Yes class basketball sucks. I watched Daleville take out Anderson in the sectional. Barber did it.

That guy is a legend. I remember when he was at Kokomo. He seemed old as hell even then.

Apologies for hijacking this thread...BUT when you're old it's natural to long for the good (better) old days, right! I agree Phil Buck was another Anderson legend for the Pirates of Madison Hts. I am also shocked that Coach Mawbey is still among us but glad to hear it! Basil Ball was was deadly when they slowed the pace and guarded in your grill.
I also think Dick Baumgartner is still running clinics and a camp in Richmond. He has to be in his 80's pushing 90. Another few coaches from Muncie and Anderson who were really good were John Robbins at Muncie South, Garth Cone at Alexandria, Everett Gates at Daleville and Alan Darner at Highland. Myron Dickerson should have won at least one state title at Muncie North especially with some of their talent (Drummer, Duerson, Isenbarger, Eckelmann, Bradley) but he did win a State Championship at Connersville.

School of 350 or so, sectional was like winning state, then go to Kokomo or Marion or Anderson and get hammered. It was still more fun than this class stuff

Class basketball is the result of too many parents wanting trophies that they never got to win. It ruined what was a great thing. Single class was a bear in the city. There were several sectionals harder than many or most regionals to get through. Not quite the same vibe as Hoosiers. But grand HS basketball spectacle. Not many easy games possible any year, often 3 very tough games to win. The last two were almost always as hard as many or most regionals. But what a week of HS BB.
I grew up in Indy into HS in the early 60's. As I recall it had a 16 team bracket and the Field House was packed for BB for multiple weekdays, at least one afternoon evening schedule, and of course two games Saturday, packed crowds. We could get out of school if our team had a game during the week! Got snowed in one weeknight one year...
My HS one of those years had a top 10 ranked team that could not clear the Butler sectional against two other top 10 teams. Not every year that tough of course, but not a one time thing at that site. Big BB schools. Attucks, Tech, Shortridge, Smaller parochial schools, often good, and others tough outs. Nightmare.
On the Southside of Indy that same year Manual had the VanArsdales in the smaller Indy and South Indy sectional. I always wondered if they would have survived Butler.
Different a little from most Indiana sectionals. Size of gym and crowd different, overall level of talent different, but same intense rivalries played out. I doubt even Hickory would have cleared that particular gauntlet. Or, some other years not any number of other tough ones like Anderson.

What's funny is that a high school with 400 students (maybe 300 now) has a gym that seats 2500. And that's considered small in Indiana.

Back to Kent; I truly hope Lewis uses Sellers mainly on Carry! Maybe a little Jacobs but a large dose of Sellers mainly because of his athleticism.
