For a guy who said he wears a suit to be a good role model and professional, the loud angry cussing is incongruous. I’ve heard the complaint a couple of times but this one sounds like more strange timing than anything else.

there was nothing purposeful about it. He was just doing whst he does screaming cuss words at who ever screwed up. The crowd was loud then it was not and he was not done screaming.

Not stating a "complaint" as such, just an opinion that it would be considerate to apply a filter to oneself in front of young children. Not that it saves them from EVER hearing it, but rather that it helps show them that adults can exercise self control and do things in their appropriate place. I guess if Lewis doesn't give a fuck about efforts some parents might be making with their kids, and has no consideration for that, then fuck it...let him yell whatever he wants. C'mon Sherm. Lighten up. This wasn't a grade school classroom, or scout troop meeting. He wasn't addressing the crowd. There was ONE time a kid might hear something. A time he would not reasonably think any number of people watching the the game would hear much of anything he said. Something dad or mom or old uncle Rob might have said watching a game on TV when the kids were supposed to be out of the room. Or likely their friend on the playground say. This says nothing about what Lewis thinks about raising kids. In this context it was mildly inappropriate at worst. Now Im old uncle fucking rob? Your making me sound like drunk cussing chomo. For the record and in case cps reads this. I dont cuss or Drink around my children or others. I have passed yearly background checks and Im deemed safe to coach, transport and Mentor your child. For the adults out there I can shit shower shave and pull of being at least partially smart for at least a couple hours before I say fuck it this sucks

He drank beer and cussed, but CPS would not be remotely interested in him...or in Mike Lewis.

This is all well and good but if I asked most of you any time in the past five years if we could get a coach who had fire, guts and would challenge our players and get us back in the right direction, but wait he cusses and the f bomb 💣 is his favorite word of choice I’m pretty sure you all would have said let’s do it! Majerus and Hunsaker also cussed up a blue streak people. Believe it or not he has toned it back since the start of the year. He just loses it especially during games like Saturday when we are way up and guys get lackadaisical or just sloppy. Keep in mind Mearns sits six feet from him virtually every game. Maybe people just need to lighten the flock up a bit and enjoy this ride?

Hell, elementary school kids throw the f bomb around. There isn’t anything new under the sun anymore. Lewis speaks the way all the college kids speak to each other. He’s a college basketball coach not a kindergarten teacher. As long as he’s not abusing his players (he’s not) I think people need to get over it. But even the biggest curser can put a filter on themselves when they make up their mind to. I need to do this every day in a professional setting. The filters disappear when I go out with friends or at home. Calhoun and CF said it too.. the littlest kids use profanity, and almost all of us were coached by someone who had a spicy tongue at least or were (verbally) abusive at worst. Hell, it was Bob Knight's heyday, and LOTS of coaches followed his example, or lack of one in demeanor. I have no idea of Lewis' behavior in practice, but in public it doesn't seem to cross a line. It seems a little old-fashioned and sanctimonious to be shocked by a four-letter word at a sporting event in 2023, just sayin'.

Back it up... a lot of people find Steve Alford to be hypocritically full of shit. At most of his stops. You can look it up. Start with Pierre Pierce and Iowa.

As usual on the internet if you express the slightest dissatisfaction with someone then you are portrayed as being a hater, wanting them gone, etc.
If I thought Charles Manson was a sure MAC championship coach, I would argue in favor of overlooking a few bad decisions in his younger years.
But still, repeatedly screaming f-bombs in an environment where you KNOW young children can hear you is immature and inconsiderate. That's just a fact.

I'm disappointed to see Sherman calling to Lewis to be fired and blacklisted by all other employers after he's had such a promising start. I, for one, am willing to cut Lewis some slack.

As for his overall coaching record, it is good, not great. He really, really didn't fit well at UCLA, a lot of good coaches have found that to be true, but he's had a good career.
Alford could have maybe used a little of the openly emotional Mike Lewis demeanor. The UCLA fans, who expect John Wooden results, and expect a lot of attention and TLC, and a lot of reverence for their program, just never thought he was committed and belonged there. It's true his aloof nature and lack of outward emotion alienated fans, more important boosters. John Wooden probably wouldn't make it at UCLA now...
I have never thought Alford's personal style or his coaching style would play that well at IU, either, even though the fans would have a hard time saying he wasn't true blue... He could go get the talent as he did at UCLA but I don't think the whole one and done pro oriented, player oriented culture at top programs was a fit for him. Good not great, he was a bit like Ray McCallum where he expected players to have his work ethic and desire. Alford with top level players too often failed to get that top performance. His successor at UCLA has had a great run, getting better player performance from top players with a lot more hard nosed approach.
Lewis is no Steve Alford on any of those counts that I can see.

Degrees of Mick Cronin - where of course BSU found Lewis!

Who the hell are you and what have you done with the REAL Sherm? Saying Lewis should be a bit more "correct" is certainly something that I agree with. Making a big deal, I don't think so.
There is a conflict here with what coaches do and a desire for strict "correct" public behavior and adherence to moralistic standards. Sherm is a saint of anti-woke, a champion for avoiding that kind of moralistic strict adherence to "propriety" to play to a sensitive audience. So, I don't get how he can advocate that skeptical approach to artificial constraints on behavior on the one hand, and yet be so vocal a critic of his lack of strict adherence to propriety here.
Common sense says coaching is a role where that isn't always natural, and it doesn't always even make sense.

As a former sailer (68-72j let me say that even we knew when it was ok to speak “sailor” and when it was not. My biggest slip up at football and basketball games is “shit” and my wife, a retired teacher,” reminds me that there are kids present and I need to watch my language. Still slip up a time or two each game I attend. Lewis is doing a good job. We lost two good players who would either be starting or have major roles on the team this year. Coleman is playing much better this year than his first two years. Sellers and Jihad are greatly improved. We are WINNING in February! Like our direction. Recruiting will be interesting, though not many scholarships to give for 23/24. Hoping we are at least 3-2 in our remaining games Lewis does need to watch his language. Go Cards.
