D totally collapsed, right on cue. We don’t have the ability to throw so this one is over. But kelly should be the qb the rest of the season so maybe they’ll actually expand the play sheet with him. It's only going to get harder for Kelly unless he can pass, but I am not optimistic there is that much upside.
This may be the high point where we caught a team not quite ready, and was slow getting any passing game going. We did not fall behind, could control clock almost enough, avoided penalties and turnovers mostly, had the D play reasonably well. Kelly as QB fit the bill for all that.
Any win we get will have to be built on that.

D totally collapsed, right on cue. Did anybody really expect us to play a lot better on that side. I would not call it a collapse as much as a case where we were at some point going to make a mistake on a pass or other big play. We did, but on fewer occasions than we have all year. That is MAC FB in a nutshell even for good teams.
D has not played better than this, and this is the MAC, holding Toledo to 13 is certainly good enough to win, if we had offensive horsepower.
Toledo is not a defensive juggernaut, are subject to the same shortcoming in any close game, and we could not test them and make that big play against them.

Well for the first time this year we looked like a real football team. proud of the defense, but finally ran out o gas. Kelly was able to keep drives alive. On a dry day Kelly will be a much better passer.

Kelly does appear to have the “it” factor. He made the plays that needed to be made. Barfield makes that catch and we’re maybe going for 2 to win or at least taking them to OT. Toledo is one of the best in the MAC. A lot of that wasnt pretty, but it’s better than I expected.

While it is nice we didn't get embarrassed today, I don't feel optimistic about much going forward. Still there are more questions than answers. Our offense is bad no matter who is playing qb. We barely had 200 total yards. That is rough. If Kelly is going to be a starting qb he needs to get much better as a passer. Maybe that comes with more reps. The weather certainly didn't help today. I say let him play the rest of the way and see how he progresses. A bowl game is essentially out of the equation so there is no reason to play your 7th year senior qb.
With that all being said, none of it really matters with Lynch calling the plays.

While we held them to 13 points I feel that is misleading. For whatever reason they were not very aggressive going down field in the passing game. One of our big weaknesses. Maybe it was the wet weather. When the game was on the line, boom. Right down field.
Our defense did make some big plays can't take that from them.

I'll never understand why they don't roll Kelly out more. Seems like good things happen when they do. Seems like is mostly just draw plays instead of a real RPO. |
