Gotta remember that once again Kelly has had 2nd and third string reps again this year plus a few of his package. So basically none that involved throwing. Toledo did not pass much today either. The announcers touched on it saying Finn was a "terrible passer" his first year playing now as a junior while still not a great thrower hes looked at as a top level mac Qb. We have had a week of our staff trying to figure out what a real RPO attack is and switching mid season. Thats alot for a great staff so its going to take us a while. I dont think this was ever going to he a miracle fix but can it be something that progressively get better by all? Is an RPO something this staff wants to take on after this year if anyone survives. Does a new coach look and say I can make this work with Kelly better or My style fits Semonza better. Winning games this year meant staying with hatcher but helped nothing future wise.

Exactly. This was all thrown together this week. Kelly and the offense should get better with more reps running the RPO. Mayne nothing earth shattering, but improved. Give Kelly time to grow into this. All things considered, I think he did a pretty good job today. What I don’t count on getting better is the play calling. It’s not going to. Lynch is who he is and not much can be done about that. We’ll run the same 4 plays over and over just as we did with our drop back passers and just as we did last year with Steele.

Execution can improve, and more wrinkles added. On the downside defenses will be better prepared. RPO doesn't put the premium on play calling as much, so worry there is a case of getting what you wish for with Kelly. RPO means we trust his literal split second read and decide. Let's face it we see same plays in large part because we don't have a lot of plays and players who would be better... I'm not completely thrilled with going to RPO as I see us in trouble when we have to pass, either because the defense dares us to or we fall behind. I see no reason to believe we have potential to engage in a shootout with anyone. This offense may protect our D and run clock. It's relative simplicity can improve execution. But. Unlike a lot of successful RPO team we are not dominant on defense, and we lack the personnel to get big plays with the pass. Personnel fitting better? Sort of. But, we need TWO playmakers at least, not just Kelly, preferably we have a pure run option threat, and also a receiver requiring double coverage who is a threat on every play.

Rob makes good point that changing offense has implications for next year. It's not just scheme. We need talent as much as offensive changes and Neu will be hampered recruiting as a lame duck, and this change not good for our promising freshman.

I would bet Mike will want to switch back to Semonza next year. And if we hang on to the kid out of Illinois, he’s a passer too. So I really think this thing with Kelly is a short term desperation move. Wouldn’t be so desperate if mike had understood he needed to go this sooner.

A coach has to make a decision on a QB and give him a few GAMES not a few downs to prove his worth. Looks from where I am, much of our offensive woes are because of the staff being indecisive about the QB. How can the coaching staff decide without giving a kid a chance? Make a choice, give the kid a chance to prove you right or wrong.

Interesting that most of the conversation sounds like it could have been said after the first game or the third rather than after the seventh. Many of these points were discussed pre-season. What a joke that the coaching staff just realized that changes had to be made. Kelly did ok passing the ball in shitty weather. Finn made some rally bad passes to the end zone and our secondary did a good job in coverage resulting in QB sacks. Maybe this is why Finn backed off because of this and also the weather. WE have been beating this dead horse to death to the point that at this point it has decomposed so that now we are beating on bare bones. Anybody ready for basketball? Womens volleyball is undefeated, The soccer team is in first place and even Field Hockey is winning. Womens basketball promises to be formidable and battle for MAC championship. Why all of this good news? Coaching staffs that are competent.

Lack of receiving and getting thumped by GSt introduced reality. They tried to make it work a game or two too much probably. But let's not assume this course ends up very much better. It's going to depend on defense, and keeping everybody's head in every play. Scheme is not the whole deal here.

Agree about the defense. Defense even without our best LB is really pretty good.

The lousy conditions probably made our D look better yesterday but let’s not forget that we’ve given up over 40 points in four of the six losses. We’ve improved a bit the past two games. Everything up to and including Western we were a sieve except the non FBS win over the Trees.

A typical student write-up. "Regardless of a 1-6 start, the future under Kelly and a menacing defense looks bright for the Cardinals, a sentiment shared among coaches and players alike."A 1-6 start NEEDS regard! And holding Toledo in horrible conditions to 13 points doesn't make our defense "menacing". Listen, I hope we turn this around and Kelly lives up to his supposed potential but other than his athleticism and running ability, he hasn't shown anything remotely worthy of being anointed a savior. He was 4-16 for 38 yards and a pick. This whole conversation reminds me of the final season of Whitford. We needed a new face/voice to squeeze out the potential of our roster. Same here, IMO. We need a NEW coach not a NEU one if we are going anywhere with this program. We'll just have to wait another year to get to a reasonable buyout.

He was 4-16 for 38 yards and a pick. I will give Kelly some credit. There were too many drops in scoring situations. Weather, or otherwise, you don't miss passes like that.
