Assistant salaries not really very good.
Probably less a problem in BB, than FB, but it's an issue when hiring a HC here, too.
Sparks had NIL here but nothing like 100K.
We need some kind of regulation in this area, I don't buy it has to be completely the Wild West. Legal reform of NIL would reasonably require disclosure to the NCAA if not public disclosure.
Don't hold your breath on a fix.

While $100k may sound like a lot, I have read that self employment tax, medicare, ss and state/local tax on NIL monies would reduce this to about $70k. Probably affects Carson Steele even more. Probably $70k more than he made at Ball State? probably about 60k more

Not bad for sitting in those candy stipes on the bench this season Good seats. Good quality CBB. Fun trip to Mackey Arena to feel the hate... If he's serious about BB, a good staff, good coaching and practice competition every day. Will they work on what he needs for a good overseas gig after college? It will give him credentials for coaching at some level. And it is money now.

I cant verify this so take it for what its worth. Last year I was told steele was Ball States highest NIil Kid. 25,000K and free housing in a ball state owened property. We tried to counter ucla with a higher package that also included a leased car. When he said no a similar package was offered to sellers

Not huge money, but not chump change either.

Not bad for sitting in those candy stipes on the bench this season The fascinating question will be "if he sits this year (I would call sitting averaging less than 10 minutes per game), will collecting the NIL for his 4th year of eligibility at IU be enough, or will he choose to go somewhere he can play more than say 20 minutes per game? Will the money be enough for him, or will playing be more important?

It seems he's probably not the type of kid that would be satisfied with sitting and just taking a paycheck, but we shall see...

Translation - "he's a practice player for us, but I really appreciate him physically challenging our post players in practice" Kind of reminds me of when Joey Burk transfer from Butler to IU and that’s what he was used for but wised up about and moved on to OSU.

Sparks would need to get a R/S and do a grad transfer.
NIL and the power of old IU in Indiana seem to be bigger here.
He must have optimistically thought here he would be a rotation player when he made the move, some chance still he would be that but with IU recruiting big men, it would probably take an injury. Or substantial development of skills. I don't see him getting quick enough to play anywhere but the post, and he's not that good on defense.

Sparks may get more minutes than we thought if this 5 star guy pulls enough stunts like this.
