There is no reason BSU has to be behind other MAC schools in NIL. This is not some sort of God-ordained, unavoidable state of nature where the BSU basketball coach can do nothing but take a passive losing victim role and roll out that excuse every year for all eternity. If BSU can convince gullible people with disposable money to blow $15 million on an idiotic indoor facility boondoggle then, surely, they can scare up $4000 for each basketball player...if they made any sort of effort. The $4000 payments, dollar for dollar, would be an order of magnitude more effective in recruiting than the facility. The indoor football facility allows...what...10 additional warm practices a year for the football team? This is an almost supernaturally stupid waste of money. But the relevance to this discussion is that it demonstrates the doner money exists for BSU athletics. To save you the math, the facility would equal about 3,750 of the rewards that Kent, Miami and whoever are giving that we supposedly can't ever hope to match.
Maybe if we created a new position (just hear me out on this) and called it something like "leader of the basketball program". Then this "leader of the basketball program" would be responsible for thinking about things like this that are important for winning and help the athletics department have the right priorities. Of course creating this completely brand new position would cost some money itself, but I think it could more than pay for itself in the long run. Then this "leader of the basketball program" would be held accountable for the competitiveness of the program...as opposed to being a focal point for yearly excuses about how BSU can never, ever, ever deal with the challenges that other MAC schools overcome effectively enough to win championships.

Spending in the past says money WAS available, and that donors preferred FB spending then. It says NOTHING about money NOW.
We have NEVER had as much donor support for athletics as the top few MAC athletic programs.
No idea why anyone would think that is not relevant to success or that it will change.
Or how the coach can be held responsible.
It's been uphill for us as money has become more important over time in BB.

Oh right. $15 million was available a few years ago but now $4000 for a handful of players is completely out of reach and we should just resign ourselves to always losing to those super rich other MAC teams. And our coach, like always, is just a poor helpless leaf in the wind. Can't possibly be expected to field a contending team....ever. We should just adopt a pussy loser attitude towards the basketball program and set our sites on maybe earing a top 8 spot someday and a MAC tourney berth.

Your right sherm 4-6 grand a player should not be hard. Maybe someone is working on that but if they are it has never been made public.. We dont know why the guys left last year but we do know we could not pay the same as the places we went. I know that at least one starter and one back up from last year did not receive anything. We know that what ever collective we had has not been updated on the public side for over a year. I originally donated to it but there is no way hell Im donating again to a collective that we cant be sure is even running.. If we had a collective that was actively promoted that had at least a grass roots option your 4000 grand number would be pretty easily attainable.. 5000 fans 50 a fan 250,000k pays 5000 per player for a few years.. Offer an autographed 8x10 picture, Meet and greet at worthern, Acces to pre season practice as part of the 50 package.. From there offer exclusive events limited to whatever number fits at a more substantial price point while remembering this is Ball State... Price accordingly

What website are you using to get total info? I can't find one that lists by school.

I really hope this is the sort of thing Lewis was vaguely referring to as underlying problems with the program in that press conf. And that he's actively working and agitating to get some necessary things done, and making himself a huge and constant pain in the ass for the supporters of the status quo, low-expectation, excuse-based element of the athletics department.
I don't have any idea if he is doing any of this, but he would be my hero if he is.

Your position is to blame the coach and hold him accountable to match performance when he has less firepower?
I won't argue much if you say we can sometimes overcome the odds and win. To say we can do just as well and "contend" as often as better heeled programs, I'll question that. We are entering a money raising contest where we have track record which predicts we are not going to win.
What is the reason that will change?

Your right sherm 4-6 grand a player should not be hard... The players we want cost more than $4000. That may be the minimum we need to match every program in the MAC, not the top contenders. (and we may need it for every scholarship athlete in every sport, not just BB, if the NCAA athlete compensation plan becomes a reality)
That $4000 will grow every year, and finding 5000 fans is a little easier said than done...We can't find 5000 fans willing to buy a ticket, much less commit to an annual ongoing $50 gift.
I support the idea but don't think this "easy" answer puts us at the top the conference equal to the top programs.

Since you love to scold others to crack an economics textbook sometime, I'd encourage you to read some Thomas Sowell.

I guess. I'm not familiar with Sowell's work on indoor football facilities

Wonder who is getting their money’s worth. These $4k rewards, or the $15 million indoor football practice facility? Who cares you didnt answer the question. No ones been talking about football.. You have been and continue the dodge the fact that Lewis or any other future coach at BSU is always going to have one hand tied behind thier back until BSU finds the money to pay to get the players its going to need to do what you want which is to win. You say grab what you need from the portal well we are going to get what we can pay for. Akron Kent Miami Toledo Western Eastern are going to get better portal players than us.. The practice facilty you brought up took about 25 years of rounding up donations from football people or people who did not mind their money going to football. Thats not Nil or Alston Rewards. Is "Feed the Bird Foundation, Inc." BSU'S official NIL organization? We don't seem to have any clearcut way to generate money for NIL. To me, this is a very important ingredient to resolving our problems regarding NIL. Hard to contribute if there isn't anywhere to contribute.

Yes there is a tab on Ball State Sports main web page that says donate and sends you to feed the bird.. There you greeted by pictures of Boogie Jaylin and a bunch of gone or even graduated football players.. We intitially started with like 12 kids we were paying

Went to the website before posting at 12:42:21 and saw that it was not updated. Hence my post that there doesn't seem to be anywhere to contribute. Shouldn't our AD know? I will contact him. Thanks!

For basketball, we are not likely to be at a disadvantage compared to other MAC schools for annual stipends of $4-6K for the whole roster. The bigger conundrum is being able to keep an existing player (Bashir) or attract potentially several target transfers which might require several 100K per year. If you had $250-$500K to spend every year in the portal it would be a big advantage in the current landscape. It requires a "dedicated" effort by the University or the coach to find a donor(s) that are emotionally invested in men's basketball and willing to pony up the funds consistently to help us buy players.
At some schools, (Miami?) I'd guess you have alums of means (perhaps former players) who recognize this new dynamic and actually approach the school to fund this concept especially if they believe in the coach and their alma mater is committed to return to glory. I believe Lewis is all-in because this is his shot. The question then becomes is the U all in? I'll believe it when I see it.
I know some don't believe we can draw like we used to and maybe sellouts are a pipe dream, but with our largest alumni base in Hamilton County less than an hour away and a 11,500 seat arena in the middle of a hoops crazy state I think we could put 7,000 plus in Worthen on a regular basis if we decided to make the investments required. Ball State can be a winner again if they choose to be. It's a choice not a chance.
