Give them credit for knocking down shots, but our defense had something to do with it too. Too many undefended looks. It was the first half of Pine Bluff for the whole game. You can't give them open looks and hope they miss.
The fact that Middleton and Bell are getting any PT is a bad sign in my opinion. They are not ready. Bell might never be. He is chaos.

I predict Bell will not be around next year. Super athlete, not yet a basketball player in terms of making normal basketball plays, being under control, etc.
We really really really need Bailey back asap.

You can't give them open looks and hope they miss. I think that was the scouting report. Better to let them shoot 30% and cut down on penetration and second chance points.
When they hit 10 straight shots outside against that plan, we may have been in too deep a hole.
After that the best chance was probably to let them die by the 3, and hope to get close. We did start to shade their hottest shooter, but what I saw is we just got caught in between and they got too many good shots, and what we did backfired by letting them in the lane to get 2nd chance points. They were a good team in that area. We would have needed VERY good defense to stop them when they were hitting that %.
What we did was imperfect to be sure. We did not eliminate the second chance points, and did let them get to the basket. Not a lot maybe, but we needed more.
But, they did cool off...from 90% back to 70%. Winning with perfect might not have been possible.
I am more worried that we didn't slice up their defense which gave us good chances if we played well. We sure didn't stay with them that last 5 minutes first half, or cut into their lead 1st 5 of the second half. That's always a key.
Lewis seemed to making the point we just didn't stay intense enough after getting behind. Might not have won, but could have walked away feeling we played up to our potential. We did not.

You are right, not only others have a chance to develop but we have a good slasher coming in, Jones is versatile at F, and even playing 3 guards we just have too many guards.
If he played great D, he'd have a shot.

Current KenPom Rankings of BSU & Opponents 11/29/2023 Toledo (3-3) 114 Ohio (4-2) 115 Kent State (4-3) 121 Akron (4-3) 122 Northern Illinois (5-2) 160 Bowling Green (4-3) 200 Ball State (5-2) 265 Miami (3-3) 270 Western Michigan (2-4) 276 Eastern Michigan (4-3) 289 Central Michigan (2-4) 304 Buffalo (1-5) 335 Indiana State (6-1) 77 Minnesota (4-2) 132 Old Dominion (2-4) 189 WIN Evansville (6-0) 203 LOSS Bellarmine (2-5) 217 Little Rock (3-4) 220 LOSS Southern Illinois Edwardsville (5-3) 234 USC Upstate (3-4) 296 WIN Detroit Mercy (0-6) 314 Arkansas Pine Bluff (4-4) 353 WIN I see that Akron, OU, Toledo, and Buffalo are the MAC teams we DON'T play twice this year. If we were actually contending, I would see this as a huge advantage as Akron, OU and Toledo are 3 of the 4 teams currently ranked as contenders. As things are, this mac schedule situation (combined with the pathetic non-conf schedule) should help to pump up the w/l record and maintain the illusion of respectability that is so vital to an excuse-based program like ours.

Not sure how good we can be at home but we surely suck on the road.

As things are, this mac schedule situation (combined with the pathetic non-conf schedule) should help to pump up the w/l record and maintain the illusion of respectability that is so vital to an excuse-based program like ours. Just like the early Whitford years, cup cake scheduling to boost your resume. I have watched schedules get built and it is not a process we can completely control. It really isn't easy to improve home schedule in any case. We could obviously do a bit better, but I don't really think this schedule is about Lewis and his resume.
It did have to do with our roster makeup I believe, and I have not so much problem with a weak schedule with 9 freshmen needing PT. I still see no reason for the 3 pure cupcakes. One maybe, one exhibition and one on the schedule maybe. THREE patsies from NAIA, D3 and the like, really doesn't help a lot.
And I wouldn't mind a strong schedule even in this rebuild year if it was part of a long term scheduling scheme.
THAT schedule, a commitment to more strong teams on the home schedule, and regular home and home with peer schools, we have not been able to create. It's a real problem for other mid majors too, but our SOS is weak by comparison on that count, and the answer is both to get one of the "tournaments" schedule where we play at least one strong game, and somehow get more D1 teams into Worthen.
The weak D1 teams this year if part of a longer series and one where they have stronger teams occasionally may be the best we can do, if we can add even ONE stronger team to replace a patsy.

My main issue with the schedule is that teams that SHOULD be cupcakes for a good MAC team are absolutely ripping us a new one this season.

My main issue with the schedule is that teams that SHOULD be cupcakes for a good MAC team are absolutely ripping us a new one this season. That's the consequence in two games of playing poorly in a rebuild year. And the number of freshmen we have, which unavoidably means some poor games.
The LR result, when they shoot 70%, and loss to MVC Evansville are neither losses we should say, unqualified, are losses to "cupcakes." Both programs obviously have ability to play well. They were games that were winnable if we played up to our absolute best, but no sense making it worse than it was.
Did you really expect to avoid problems losing those NIL transfers?

Bellarmine a very small D1 school looks to me to be a very tough game for us to win. They beat BG by over 20 points & after the Little Rock game I could see us in the same situation. Bellarmine will play basketball players vs our athletes. Davenport is a good coach & they will start 4 guards against us. Hope we are up to a challenge.

They lost to Louisville last night 73-68 at the YUM center. As I live in Louisville, I've been to a great many Bellarmine games over the years. They are fun to watch. They play an extremely disciplined style of offense. Two key concepts....player movement & ball movements. You will often see 6-7 passes without a single dribble. Davenport was a finalist for the BSU job when Shitbird was hired. Their offense will be a tough challenge for our defense. Near the end of shot clocks they'll use dribble penetration and then kick out for an open three, and they shoot it pretty well. We do not defend the 3 worth a crap. They also use a lot of back door cuts which we are also vulnerable with. Our frosh look they played a steady diet of zone defenses in HS. They often turn their head when the player they are guarding passes the ball. "Ball-you-man" is a foreign concept. Bellarmine switches on nearly every pic. Held Louisville to just 20 points in the first half. Louisville got back into the game when they finally stopped jacking up three's and started getting their shots in the paint.
