I'm curious what your plan would have been to avoid a rebuild of some kind? Magical thinking on recruiting the portal is fine,
Glad you asked. Let's have a look at what our in-state peer, ISU did. They are currently at #61 in the nation. They would be the top team in the MAC, or at the very least a strong contender. Three of their top four players were brought in from the portal this year, from USI, USF, and Bradley. To you this IS magical thinking because you mind is so stuck in failure, excuse-making, bar-lowering and worship of the status quo that you can't comprehend how a mid-major coach could ever operate at this level. Likewise, I'm sure if I wanted to take the time to dive into the rosters of MAC contenders Akron, Kent, Toledo and OU, I could find similar methods of roster building that are fully within the reach of BSU, if we had the coach to do it. "Rebuilding year" is just another in a 20 year long line of lame ass excuses. It has long been used by apologists of weak recruiting, but with the portal it has become completely ridiculous. Recruiting talks and bullshit walks. I thought it's been 25+ years?? Feels like more.

If someone wanted to argue that Schertz was a better hire than Lewis, I'd probably agree. The guy's got a helluva coaching resume, and I've long wondered why more lower level head coaches don't get job offers from the ISUs and BSUs of the world.
However, to argue that Schertz was a better hire merely because he got transfers from USI, USF and Bradley is pretty shallow. I mean Lewis got transfers from Loyola Marymount, Boston and Southeastern Community College. Big deal.
Hardly evidence that ISU is great at portal recruiting and that BSU sucks at it.
However, there seems to be little question that Schertz has built a better team in his third year at ISU than Lewis has built in his second at BSU. Will be interested to see the outcome of the game. Based on the current rankings, it looks like a 25-30 point beating for the Cardinals. Hopefully it's not quite that bad.

I remember buying a shirt that had something like Ball State....Big Ten Champs.....3-0! Ended up losing to Illinois in 2nd round of NCAA's.

Through season 2, game 9: Lewis 27-14 Whitford 8-31 Taylor 10-29 Buckley 24-15 McCallum 22-15 Hunsaker 34- 8 Majerus 23-14 The comparisons don't make all that much sense. Majerus, Taylor and Whitford inherited more depleted rosters than Hunsaker, Ray, and Buck who were essentially inheriting good or great players and teams they had coached. Majerus, Hunsaker, Ray and Buck played harder schedules. No doubt our best coaches. Billy Taylor stepped into one of the biggest dumpster fires in CBB. Too much differs to compare head to head. On top of that CBB has changed a lot since we had our glory days. The MAC is arguably weaker, harder to recruit great players and keep them. Our revenue picture much different. We can agree on one thing. Whitford had by far the worst start. Lewis on most counts has had a good one but had been smacked by NIL and portal where no other coach has. He's light years ahead of our last three coaches, and no real reason for doom and gloom at this point.
