The portal is going to hurt even more when Jihad goes. Will Mickey stay? Jones? Lots of black clouds there...

Well if he thinks going elsewhere is going to get him brighter exposure he doesn't have to look very hard or far to see how that can turn out. Here he's "the" guy. Go somewhere else and he could be the next Sparks or Coleman. Today’s game requires you to recruit your best players twice, literally. The X factors would appear to be playing time, money and whether your best players believe you can attract a championship roster in a single year. It’s also about culture and fit. Lewis has been a winner his whole career and he’s a bulldog. He has to keep his core and get four or five more in the portal to have a chance and guys have to buy what he’s selling. That’s the whole enchilada but will he or the U come up with the dineros to make it happen?

Not sure why but I feel like the BG loss eliminated the last hope I had that this team might be able to rise above its station in the MAC.
There's nobody sitting the bench now that I want to see more of, at least nobody that's not injured.
The only way we improve from here on out is if Middleton and Jones stop playing like freshmen and start playing like sophomores. I feel like everyone else has solidly established their potential/limits.
Middleton just needs to be given the ball for about 34 minutes a game. Let's see what happens. Can't be much worse than when Anderson has the ball.
As for next year, the only players I'm sure I want back are Jihad, Doughty, Jones and Middleton. There are a few others I wouldn't grouse about if they came back and several I'd be happy to see move on.

Mickey might make a lateral move, but Lewis has helped him, not clear there's a big market for him either. Anderson, Bailey have not broken out, but we should definitely want them here. They're in that group may need to be "recruited." Jihad will have market, maybe like Coleman, but probably lateral unless somebody believes he can improve on D and with the ball outside.

Players don't need a resume to transfer. They just need the desire.
And they may just have the desire because they feel like they'll never be able to build a resume at their current school.

Anderson and Pearson are role players off the bench at best on a good team. Having said that, I'm still trying to convince myself Anderson can actually play at this level even off the bench.
Bailey needs to be shown the exit. He killed us after we made our comeback last night. I cannot stand his game. Middleton, Doughty, and Jones are the only ones I'd be disappointed if they left (besides obviously Jihad). I personally think Jihad iis making a mistake if he leaves. Even Jones, though, I find myself trying to be convinced that he can be an offensive threat at this level. I feel like he can, but feelings let you down more often than not.
Bell, Hendriks, and Adams surely won't be back next year. Not sure about Zagorsak. He at least plays hard, but you can tell he has no idea what's going on when he's in the game. I doubt Watts will be back. Brown seems like too much of a project for today's way of building a team.
Lewis better recruit like his career depends on it.
I watched the ladies team tonight. Talk about a disciplined group that plays like a team and executes what the coach draws up and knows how to stick a dagger in the other team and break it off...

Better than what? 11-10 and 9th place in your league? There's always someone who wants you and the grass is so green and a fresh reset seems just the thing you need to prove yourself when your 19 years old. Plus maybe less hard coaching and criticism.

They do need a better place to go, and a coach who wants them, too. Maybe but once they enter the portal, whether they find another spot to go or not, Lewis doesn't have to hold their scholarship. Once the athlete decides to take that step, it's their problem. So again, it's more what the athlete desires, and if they're wrong about their perceived market value or what they might think they can get elsewhere, they live with that.

Jones is playing 30+ minutes, doing well. He's set up with a great chance next year. Why move?

I’m assuming Jihad, Jones and a few others are gone next year. Our lack of success, minimal NIL dollars and Lewis’ coaching style all contribute to another mass exodus.
19 and 20 year old kids are attracted by the next bright shiny thing. The grass is always greener and so on. Sure they could end up riding the bench like Coleman, but then again, they could find success and more $ like Sellers and Bumb

I can't imagine Jihad stays. He's carried this team, so imagine what he could do on a good team. NIL will come into play as well, which we have shown that we just can't match.

I'm hoping that Sparks' and Coleman's season will cause some to think real hard before pulling the trigger to transfer. Jihad only has 1 year left. Does he risk getting paid to maybe play 15 minutes per game when he knows he will be the focal point of our team again next season? Only Sellers' decision looks like the right one purely from a playing time standpoint. I'm not as down on Anderson as some are on this board. Granted, this last game we can almost put the "L" entirely in his locker. Nine TO's for a point guard is unheard of & unacceptable. But, he has had some games were he has carried us. I think Middleton will continue to get more & more minutes. I was a little surprised Lewis praised Jones again after BG game. I really like him & his potential. But, I thought that was his worst game of the season as he got beat multiple times on baseline spins moves and dribble-drives to basket. Thought he looked & played a step slow. Looking forward to watching Saturday's game against Western. Go Cards!! We Fly!!

Looking forward to watching Saturday's game against Western. Go Cards!! We Fly!! Totally agree on Coleman and especially Sparks. Jihad should be paying very close attention to things like that. Plus, he has two major flaws in his game that need a lot of off season attention: Upper body strength to finish at the rim and ballhandling. He also needs to learn how to foul less while playing good D. Jones - I really think he's getting tired. He's by far our best defender and he plays his ass off every minute of every game. He always guards the other team's best player even if it's a mega quick guard. He really shouldn't have to do that, but our guards don't defend. It's definitely affecting his shooting too. Anderson - I've mostly liked most parts of his game, but he is definitely flakey and has cost us some wins. He's very inconsistent. Reminds me of a lot of Whitford PG's, as he really needs to be playing the 2-guard.
