When he was still here, he had custody of his sons and his ex-wife was coaching in the WNBA in Chicago or L.A. I would guess his sons are middle and high school age now so maybe he’s just content doing the Mr. Mom gig which is a good thing. Focus on raising your sons and then maybe get back into coaching at the D2 level. Whitford was not a bad guy just socially awkward and he did have the ability to connect with kids. His class he left for Lewis was pretty good.
He just wasn’t the best bench coach, IMO and didn’t recruit big men well. Moses had a nice statistical career but got dominated by more athletic bigs and was too passive. Teague turned into an all league player but he was really a big 3 not a 4 or 5. I hope James is in a good place and finds his next best thing when the time is right. Sometimes failing is the best teacher for your next shot.

Yeah Whitford seemed like an OK guy. I was quite excited about his metrics-centric approach when he was hired. My one real issue with him personally was when he attempted to somewhat dishonestly inflate his accomplishments and make excuses. I suppose I shouldn't judge too harshly as this is just human nature when one starts to sense one is failing at his job. Thing was that I had already had my fill of that sort of thing from the administration toadies on this board before I ever heard it from Whitford.
Nor do I believe, as some here appear to, that his low-key style and mild game demeanor led to his problems. Coaches win with this style...if they are good at it. Whitford was not. An intense and boisterous sideline demeanor does not necessarily equate to good coaching and winning. Not that I can think of any particular examples of this at the moment.

I would not be surprised if he ended up as an Assistant at Xavier again!
I believe Reality Check was right on with their remarks!

My kids and his kids went to pre school together and I then coached his son a few years of baseball. Really a nice a guy just super hard too talk too the easiest of convos were just awkward. He almost seemed to be a little on the spectrum... Now his wife on the other hand was a crazed rabid bitch and thats putting it nicely.

Definitely on the spectrum somewhere, but unusual a little about that in getting connected to the players as well as he did.

Never got the spectrum feeling at all. Won't dispute about ex-wife. Maybe not the words I'd choose. When the article about the divorce came out, made sense. Program was a dumpster fire those first few years + kids + divorce from her. Jeezus!

Certainly very high functioning. Asperger's or close to it. Every coach I've ever met is a junkie. That is absolutely crazy. My wife's a psychotherapist and our oldest has Aspergers. There's no way. All the other stuff I agree with, but that? I call BS. Being awkward around people that are trashing you makes more sense than being on the spectrum.
