I am still puzzled by the attraction of NDSU to this conversation. For that matter, the addition of UMass has me scratching my head. I certainly hope that the MAC gods are planning a second addition - e.g. WKU. Beyond that, a 16-member conference would be nice and tidy, but I can't identify two likely candidates to add to the mix. MTSU doesn't appear to be interested, Marshall has burned their bridges, nobody from the MVC would want to leave and I'm not aware of an FCS candidate that's clamoring to join the party. Why would NDSU join for football only? Why is that an advantage to anyone? Just a gut feeling that whoever is added will be a full member

We won’t add anyone that’s not bringing all sports.

Just looked at recruiting results at UMass over the past four years, they have been heavily reliant on the transfer portal. 20 in 2024. 22 in 2023. 19 in 2022. 13 in 2022. Players rated mainly in mid-80s. Results on the field have not been great. Still, glad they are back in the MAC and this time for basketball as well.

IU and Purdue can send their field hockey teams to UCLA or Oregon using part of their share of Big10 football money. Where does BSU get the money to send their field hockey team to UMass? From the revenues of that field hockey? Well that comes to about 5 bucks per year. From the football revenues? BSU football is an 8-figure money pit.
You know where the money comes from.

This comes from the MAC message board and may help clarify: Steve1981 Wrote: "Now understand the MAC officially holding back to Thursday. This is our Athletic BOT meeting scheduled for 1:30PM and full BOT meeting at 2PM". www.umassp.edu/bot/meetingsQuote: Time posted to the University’s website: 12:40 p.m. February 27, 2024 Athletics Committee Board of Trustees University of Massachusetts At the request of the President and approval by the Chair, a special meeting of the Athletics Committee is hereby called to convene on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. for the University of Massachusetts. The meeting will be held remotely pursuant to the Governor’s Order Suspending Certain Provisions of the Open Meeting Law, G.L. c.30A, ⸹20 dated March 12, 2020, and subsequently updated and extended by the Governor and their staff. An agenda is attached. Zunilka Barrett Secretary to the Board of Trustees From a WMU poster on the MAC board in the same thread: "Correct. Expect the MAC to formally announce UMass as a new member soon after the conclusion of the 2 p.m. BOT meeting. The on-campus press conference welcoming UMass to the MAC should be early next week." The above Steve1981 is a Mass supporter who has been posting to the MAC board.

That seems to me a good use of student fees when you consider the small budget and very little in frills.

We can't even begin to compete in this space

We can't even begin to compete in this space Some of the numbers thrown around in that piece are staggering. It took us how many years to get $15 million to build the indoor practice facility for football. And they're talking about basketball programs throwing around $3 million a year in NIL. Yeah, we can't compete.

This is what Ive said time and time again. It does not matter if its Lewis or bob the builder. Until we can offer real money we are going to get scraps. You want a top 100 portal kid open your checkbook hes not coming here with out it.. This is not some fantasy its as real as it gets
