I never believe it when kids early on say they’re staying. The portal is open way too long to feel too comfortable about who you have. But, it opens up another scholarship. Plus I think the juco guard we signed will start at the 2.

Does anyone know exactly what is and isn't legal as far as pre-portal contact is concerned? Can the player themselves make inquiries about possible NIL at other schools prior to entering the portal?
It would be pretty easy for a program, or the booster of a program, to make a casual, unofficial, behind the scenes, easily-deniable contact with a targeted player who has not yet entered the portal. This would be so easy, in fact, that it's more or less pointless to have a rule against it. Only the most hyper-scrupulous schools would be stopped by it, and do you really want to disadvantage those schools?
My guess is that there are currently gray areas the size of Alaska in the NIL/portal rules. The types that run the NCAA hate, hate, hate NIL, and thus probably can't work up much energy to effectively think things through and administer it.
