Crap!! Basheer has entered the portal! Not what I wanted to hear! Is someone looking to buy him from the Cardinals?

Crap!! Basheer has entered the portal! Not what I wanted to hear! Is someone looking to buy him from the Cardinals? Exactly what I’m thinking. With the numbers he put up this year, you have to believe he has been inundated with unofficial indications of the kind of NIL dollars he could command.

I felt like he was virtually a lock to leave until Sparks committed to come back. That sucks but with a year left maybe he wants to get back up to Michigan area for his last year. With UM having a new coach and lots of schollies open I would not be surprised if they offer him.

Basheer about to get paid. I'm sure he's gotten some "indications" as to what he can pull in. And I agree, UM might take a chance on him with Dusty May up there now. Just as long as he doesn't pick one of the Michigan directionals. Was really hoping he'd stick with Sparks returning, but, I can't say I'm totally surprised. (and maybe Basheer felt Sparks would stifle his production) However, just a week ago Basheer was "lets work, brother" when Sparks committed to come back. What changed.......? Welp, it's on Lewis to fill the holes every year so we'll see what he can do. The portal is not going away so this is the new every year and the successful coaches will make the best of it.

Well we still have one more proven productive MAC big man than most, if any, MAC schools have.

The time. This is how it will be for mid-majors from here on out. The best players will get recruited to go to the power leagues, and we'll have to call up from the low majors, or take the castoffs from the power leagues. I don't want to hear shit from coaches, either, because their lack of fulfilling their employment contracts is part of the reason we got to this point. They set the example by bolting as soon as a better offer came along. Players now are doing the same.

Honestly, I'd hit d2 and juco hard for the best players we can get from those sources. D1 castoffs are castoffs for a reason. I see a ton of dudes with averages like 1.8 ppg and they're in the portal. What's the point? Kids getting 10 pts a game or better at the D1 level will be in bidding wars to get and we don't have the ability to compete with that. Schools are offering our kids cash to go in the portal so lets just start raiding what we can get. Be aggressive and get out in front of it like our competitors have been doing. Maybe we HAVE to recruit high school kids and just keep replacing them when they leave a year or two later. No one picks a school for anything but money anymore, it seems. That's not a world we can do well in until we have the cash to back it up.

Toledo picked up Ray J from a school (Boise) a definite cut above MAC level and got one good year of production and one POY year out of him. Point being that it's not smart to neglect D1 castoffs, or any potential source of production. I've always felt like Europe was an underutilized potential source for the MAC, as another example.

Oh I’m not saying totally ignore d1 players without much of a resume, I’m just saying there are really good players in places other than d1 we should try to really explore. And I’m not averse to trying to get 6’10 Lithuanians who have no fear.

Jihad made us a very good double post team, and his outside shot was good enough for inside out play.
I had some doubts about whether Sparks coming back was really going to be quite as good a fit as it seemed. With the added inside offense, we would be slower, less athletic, and counting Bailey have 3 suspect defenders starting. We'd lose chances to score off the bounce.
Now we're committed to inside out. I sure hope he can hit some FTs...
We're still pretty good size. With Jihad gone we don't need to recruit big, can add a good wing shooter and replace much of his scoring, our D can be better, we can run, pressure D if we get guard, wing depth in the portal.
Plus, and this is heart warming, we see more of Big Ben... Should also give Doughty his chance to develop as a MAC inside player. Jones gets some of Jihad's minutes.

It seems like all the Eastern Euro players in the MAC are pretty mediocre. No guards, just lumbering dudes who are back up front line players.
