Wonder if he will be able to wander off to California for a break during recruiting season in this new job? Probably not. Likely this position demands more accountability than the BSU head coach position

The AD approved his time away for family reasons, he did not wander off for a break. Unclear it had any negative impact on recruiting or other job functions.
Whitford is history. Mixed history for sure. Why a personal attack? Different AD, no similar circumstances.

The AD approved his time away for family reasons, he did not wander off for a break. Exactly my point. He may now have a job like the rest of us, where he can't just take off for an extended time during a crucial period. And it may also be a job where he can't fail to produce jack shit for 9 years and still keep it. It may not be the low-expectation, minimal-pressure-from-above job that BSU head coach was

He did not "take off" for an extended time where his physical presence in Muncie was crucial at all. He isn't required to and doesn't sit 9-5 in an office on campus in the summer. He returned for camps, recruiting visits, and other duties requiring his presence.
Actually, Sherm, most bigger firms now grant extended family leave, and if as in this case it was determined he could travel for recruiting and handle office work remotely. This was not as a huge issue for the AD as you make it.

In fact, there were no huge issues at all over the entire 9-year course of Whitford's time here. The administration's only real hope and goal for BSU basketball was that it continue to exist. And it did. You are correct that Whitford spending weeks in California during recruiting season had absolutely no impact on that. Recruiting is, after all, a low-effort, hands-off sort of activity that could easily be phoned in from CA.
Nor did the whole situation have any impact on your yearly excuses as to why Whitford's BSU teams were never able to compete in the MAC conference.

My only problem with whit was on the outside he did not seem to care about losing all that much. Just took it in stride.. Lewis flat out says we were not good, We shouldnt lose, I dont want to lose , We lost to many, I hate fucking losing, Losing Fucking Sucks... All qoutes from podcasts interviews conversations

Certainly did not express much emotion of any kind.

Certainly did not express much emotion of any kind. Whit coached one of my sons and I think you'd be surprised. He dropped f bombs, kicked players out of practice and one of the other players said he has a scar on his knuckle from punching through a wall. I do remember a game where he got t'd up for losing his s***. I just know I wish him well. He is a good coach in my books, treated our son like a human being, got him connected so he could play internationally and still takes his calls for advice. Pretty sure he got Huggy his job with the Magic too. He knows his stuff. Spend 10 minutes with him talking Ball and you're going to see that passion. Think he's in the right spot. Hope he succeeds. I'm more interested in what BSU is doing this upcoming season.

No doubt he was a good guy and deff a basketball nerd. I just never liked his coaching, its style or the results. His players deff loved him but he never connected with the alum in any way

In fact, when they first started talking about "the Ball State basketball coach" I assumed they were talking about Lewis. They clarified it was Whitford. I just never mentioned it because it seemed so far removed from his public persona and nobody else seemed to confirm this side of him.

I watched a lot of practice, saw fire, intensity there. Very rare by comparison in games.
In social settings much better with faculty, business people 1 on 1 and in small groups.

I'm blessed to know quite a number for very nice, caring people in my life. And, given nine years to try, every one of them could coach BSU basketball to the MAC tourney finals just as many times as Whitford did. However, I'm not promoting any of them for the position.

Don't worry Sherm, no chance an AD anywhere would pay attention to your ideas about coaching hires.
