Pretty sure this was the bad guy at Cowpens: Not to mention terrorizing Gary and Wyatt while Wyatt's parents were out of town.

Mtn West adds Hawaii as 8th full time member. Next topic is adding NIU & Toledo as FB members only. If you check NIU blog it's send the papers so we can sign. Toledo ? Toledo seems to think where does the rest of our teams go to play if not in the MAC. NIU seems to think they will have no problem getting into the Horizon League. Toledo wants more like MVC or stay in MAC without playing FB in the league. Mtn West may add only one school as they definitely want at least 8 conference games. I can't see NIU being in the Mtn West in football in 5 years but say good luck. They may play us as a non conference Fb opponent within 8 to 10 years. Toledo leaving MAC would hurt league while NIU to me gets a so what reaction.

I'm no NIU fan but they have won more MAC Football championships than any one else over the last 10 & 20 year spans. Over the last 10 NIU has 4 over the last 20 they have 6. I think any program with that track record would be missed.

The most important part of this story is whether the MAC will remove conference requirement that all schools play MAC FB.
If the MAC loses good programs or keeps them they are still bottom feeders in the FBS, but I agree that if good programs leave it is of some importance, it makes it more obvious FBS membership is a fiction, where the conference best case is being a stepping stone to real G5 status.
If that is the role we play, why require everybody to play FB when that is not in the cards for them...

NIU brings no fans to away games & doesn't draw at home either. It's men's basketball program is annually one of the worst as is it's baseball program which it would like to drop.Yes, they went to the Cotton Bowl & this year beat Notre Dame. Maybe I'm wrong & most other MAC programs want them to stay to play them in football. But I remember them leaving before & within 5 years wanting back in the MAC. The Mtn West is not the current PAC 8 or the Big 12. They will not be getting 5 million a yr from ESPN to be on TV. I don't see FB fans staying up to watch NIU play Hawaii at midnight EST nor even Hawaii fans getting up at 9 am to see them play NIU. They will not be getting more Air Force, New Mexico, UTEP & Wyoming fans to DeKalb than they were BSU, WMU,CMU & Toledo fans now.Nor will those teams bring out more NIU fans. But the big problem is no one will care to watch them on TV other than some guys betting on the game.Whatever money they get from ESPN in the first deal is more than that conference will garner in the next contract. I have been to Laramie,El Paso,Logan, & live in Colorado Springs they are not big college FB towns more like the MAC. AF practically gives away tickets for FB now other than Navy/Army. NIU will be a $5 ticket given at King Soopers (Kroger) with a $50 purchase.

I went in a King Soopers in downtown Denver last month and it was exactly like my local Kroger here in Indy except for the 8 security guards patrolling the store.

Been that way for a LONG time.

I don't see MAC making any significant changes. MAC has be consistent and predictable.

The rump of the Mountain West is desperate to refill its ranks and make the best of a bad situation after being fleeced by the rump of the PAC10 which was desperate to refill its ranks and make the best of a bad situation. If NIU moves they won't fundamentally change their situation. They will still be in a sorry-ass, low- interest, money-losing, wanna-be, pretend "FBS" football conference...it's just marginally less sorry than the MAC. What's the point? I think you all realize this, but has it occurred to you NIU's situation is, in fact, the light at the end of the MAC tunnel? The pot of gold at the end of the MAC rainbow? This would be a best case scenario if BSU "INVESTS" in football and manages to have consistent success in the MAC, like NIU has. NIU has reached the point that BSU football supporters want to strive for and.....it sucks. When your current reality sucks and loses a ton of money, and your best case future dream scenario sucks and loses a ton of money, maybe you need to ask yourself just what the f--- you are doing.

Disagree. The pot of gold at the end of the MAC rainbow for me is winning conference championships. Whether we do it in FBS, FCS, D2, or D3 isn't super relevant to me. And winning conference championships, to me, is not a stepping stone to get into a better conference. If I had any power to control any of this I would abolish all taxpayer-funded schooling. But since I don't, I'll root for conference championships.

NIU is as big of an attention whore as Marshall. They will probably make a move to MWC for football, then play all other sports in Horizon or Missouri Valley (like Valpo who plays football in Pioneer League).
NIU made a similar move to the Big West in 1992. It lasted 3 years before they begged to come back to the MAC.

Lol... that's a sobering analysis. Yeah, I'm not stuck on pretending. We aren't P4. I'm ok with admitting who we are. Focus on academics and bball (where its easier to field a truly competitive team). Kinda like Dayton.

I know (some) folks would lose their minds, but the MAC, or at least BSU, should consider options to step down a level or two and get on an even playing field with other schools in the same boat. "Deemphasize" football. I don't mean eliminate it or try to make it even less competitive than it already is, but, right size it. We aren't P4 and never will be. We aren't even really G5 at this point. We are barely a good FCS program. We have improved our facilities greatly but even at capacity the stadium is among the smallest in FBS. So right there we're never going to generate enough revenue, even if we sold out every game. I know the MAC AD's are having discussions about the direction of college football and the MAC's place in it. Hopefully there'll be some level headedness and reality to it. I don't want to dump the program but I do want it competing at the appropriate level in today's landscape. Reduce scholarships, limit travel to regional schools to reduce travel budgets, (I think P5 is going to move away from scheduling us anyway) cap coaching salaries. I'd still go to the games. It'd be alot more fun if the games were more competitive and we were playing winning football, even if its at a lower division. Lots of really good football at the FCS and D2/3 level. If coaches want to earn more, win more and move up. MAC schools paying their coaches a million plus is nuts at this point. Yes, I understand the market drives that, but the salary disparities even within the MAC is a little crazy. (is CMU getting ROI on the million plus they're paying McElwain?) We are only able to schedule FCS and service academy teams to our home non conference schedule so dropping down a division/G5 creating it's own more reasonable division isn't really going to cost us attractive home games. Getting paid 1.2 million to get the absolute shit kicked out of us by Georgia/Miami et al doesn't make that much sense either. Getting humiliated by JMU was the icing on the cake. We're kidding ourselves. I'd much rather see more money going to basketball programs at the MAC level. THAT's where we can do something big. And level the playing field in all the non revenue sports. Start charging nominal prices for tickets to those events to generate something to help offset some costs.
I'm tired of Sherm's desire to keep increasing the charging of student fees to pay for this stuff......
