This team is softer than a Letterkenney birthday party. They're 10-ply, for sure.

Press conference. www.youtube.com/watch?v=crP9lciOvtkPersonally I think a big contributing factor is we don't have strong player leadership. We need someone to step up and be a leader. It should be Mickey but hell, he gets asked a question in the press conference and when he answers he won't look people in the eye. He lowers his head and he might say the right stuff, but he's quiet and almost embarrassed to be speaking. That's not a leader. Does this team have captains? They need to take charge. It's time for one of those private team heart to heart meetings.

No leadership on the floor at all! They seem a little tentative when playing and that must be bc Lewis is up their butt about moving the ball around first. I think that when they do shoot that they’re almost like oh man I'm the last guy with the ball so I have to shoot! The lousy 3 pt percentage points to this I think. Also what 12 turnovers the first half!!!

On the plus side, TJ Burch .ade strides in sharing the ball. I had seen selfishness in previous games. I'd play him more minutes. I'm disappointed in what I've seen so in Hernandez. Has Hendrich regressed? I saw some offense and rebounding from last year. I'd like to see Daughty get some minutes. Yeh, I really like Burch. He almost plays with too much confidence for a freshman. Makes mistakes, but has a real upside.

Post game on the radio coach said we are just too selfish to share the ball and it is on him to correct that. Maybe, but I don't get the constant rotation of players in and out that doesn't breed selfishness. My God, it was a merry-go-round of substitutions the WHOLE game. I thought that in the second half of the Dayton game that we finally were getting untracked... We may not have the ball movement Lewis wants, but unless he wants layups all the time, it seems to me we're getting plenty of decent shots. The issue seems to be we can't shoot for shit. Our only game above 40% from the field was Franklin. Our only game above 30% from 3 was Dayton, and most of the time we're at 25% or worse. You can share the ball all you damn want, but if players can't knock down shots you still ain't winning. We are the team that can't shoot straight. We expected to get high percentage shots inside with Sparks, and on the bounce with Hernandez and Hill resulting in open looks for Gorosito, Hart, Pearson and Watts. The opponents are clogging the middle effectively and we are not hitting outside.
I believe Lewis wants that ball movement to hit people ready to shoot and we're sometimes getting that and still missing, but a lot of the open shots are for guys not catching and shooting like they expected to get the ball and are ready.
Maybe a good point above about a merry go round of substitutions making consistency harder, but watching the starters fail to get in synch and seeing no change when substituting has to be frustrating for a coach who is obviously not getting what he drills the team on in practice.

OK enough on failing offense...Apart from not hitting shots, I was struck last night how the athletes for Detroit could swarm to the ball and use their length to harass our shooters inside. Still recover outside. At the other end we aren't seeing that.
Sparks is a liability inside, not so much on his man, but every time he helps, he is out of position and leaves a man open. Although he worked the boards, he just can't help and recover and we give up too many shots inside.
Hendricks is active, better on that count, but I don't like him getting switched on somebody outside, he's getting beat 1 on 1. Better than Sparks, adequate maybe, but not a rim protector. We need to prevent perimeter players getting into the lane.
So far we have alternately covered shooters but seen them find cutters to the basket, or helped to stop the drive and left the wrong guys open. We're killed on the P&R. We recruited more athleticism at wing and guard to defend the perimeter, but the only player who really prided himself on defense was probably Burch and as a freshmen, it's hard to make that transition.
The others are good athletes (Hart playing sparingly, Hernandez getting lost, Hill from JUCO having to adjust, Gorosito pesky but short) Watts is perhaps the most ready. But others having to adjust and change, work harder on D.
It's not easy to defend, a learning curve...That may be improving but we're a long way from the D that is supposed to be our bedrock.

Hart has not impressed me nor Hernandez. IMO Hill is the best talent and I like Burch and Watts. Gorosito has a great looking jumper but is tied up by bigger defenders. Totally disgusted on how inconsistent and spastic Mickey is. Sparks is a mystery as is Jones. I can relate to coach being frustrated, but there is some talent there. Maybe another offensive set, play others? Press? Something has to happen soon.

just about anyone off the street could hit 2out of 10 3 pointers with nobody guarding them. Our guys were wide open most of the time.

just about anyone off the street could hit 2out of 10 3 pointers with nobody guarding them. In an open gym. Maybe.
In a D1 BB game under the bright lights?

There are some basketball players walking around campus who with a f--- yeah I could do that attitude could hit those shots because they would be like our players be wide open. There have been numerous examples of walking on and making the team across all sports. The most famous one recently was the center from Kent State.

Also what 12 turnovers the first half!!! After the game my wife (also a BSU grad) made the same comment about leadership. She went on to say there is not a single player on the team that plays with the same fiery edge that Lewis played. She's absolutely right. Burch might have some of that in him, but cannot expect him to be that leader as a frosh. I was really hoping for some improvement in our play, but it appears we regressed further. Our shooting continues to be abysmal. It has to improve at some point as we had plenty of wide open looks. The thing area that bothers me the most is our poor rebounding & team defense. We still can't defend pic-and-rolls. On any given shot we're lucky to have two or three of our five players blocking out their man. Our perimeter players just turn their head while their man crashes to for the long rebounds. That's what I always liked about Hunsaker's team. Their team defense and rebounding was their strength! Hoping for better next week! Go Cards!!
