You coach em and then they leave.

Agree with all the thoughts about the frustrations of the coaching profession, and how they may have been increased in the new environment, and will throw in that MAC coaches are even more disadvantaged than other levels of coaching. But yet, each season, SOME coach will overcome all this and win the MAC and go to the tourney....why is it never ours? Such wonderful excuses though. We have 24 years of the BEST excuses. So there's that I'm not making excuses for him. Just pointing out the realities. He's definitely not getting it done.

You spend your proceeding stints at major conference schools, then you finally take your shot at a low mid major and simultaneously get smacked in the head with NIL, unlimited transferring and 6/7 year eligibility….that could be a big kick in the n*ts Good observations. Timing is everything. 10 years ago, Lewis approach and coaching style might have been successful at Ball State. Lewis comes in and wins 20 games his first year with Whitford’s players. Year 2 he gets gob smacked by the portal ( by his own admission) and goes sub .500. Year 3 we may be seeing what his true capabilities as a coach are. We’ll see…

We’ll see… This may also be another aspect of portal recruiting. This looked like a very good group (may still be) but the issue is you can't really know the mentality of players as well. Will they play well together is an issue since you bring in so many.
This era you don't have many skilled returning players who know the ropes and have learned to fit together. You are counting on replacing talent level, can't really know about fit. If there is a misfit of any kind, it's an expensive mistake. Recruiting HS, you can always wait for a player to come around, have more leverage to teach, get rewarded for development.
This is all short term.

The perfect example is the parity in college football this year. No single team stands out, and many of the top 10 teams are title contenders yet not really elite.

Detroit Mercy may be better than #341 as they lost to Wake today by only 10.
