Just read O’Gara’s summary. Says the same things about Plitt vs Riley and that Plitt willing to force the ball downfield. The kicker is Neu’s quotes. Commented on Riley being able to make plays as a runner and so he takes off and does that while Plitt (and I’m paraphrasing a bit here) “stands in the pocket and goes through the progressions, keeps his eyes down field and recognizes coverages.” There you have it. One qb is willing/able to stand in there and make full use of our WRs and the other would rather break off the play and run.

I thought we were all more worried about facing QB’s that were a threat to run? We just don’t want that QB on our team? Neal makes some really big plays with his feet, so sometimes that is the right decision. Plitt made more big plays last night, but he also turned the ball over a lot. Half Neal Half Plitt is what we need.

In terms of running QBs, there's a difference between what we have had difficulty defending and what we might want to do offensively.
It seemed to me Plitt's decision-making in terms of when to throw and when to run was more in line with how our offense should effectively operate ... even though he might not have the ability to make the big runs like Riley.
Even with all our penalties and turnovers last night, we kinda sustained drives. We had 6 drives of more than 5 plays. Compare that to 3 of more than 5 plays against Ohio and 4 of more than 5 against EMU.
And even then, four of our shorter drives ended with TOs.

We sustained some drives but ultimately scored 13 points against a bad Toledo defense. Neal probably does look to run too quickly and too frequently, but I think we underestimate the importance of ball security. That might be why Neal was listed in a preseason list as QB with best decision making.

It’s about Riley breaking the pocket and bailing too soon. Not letting plays develop. I like his ability run and we should use it by design as it’s effective. But it does our passing offense little good to have Riley drifting out of the pocket quickly and then trying to run under pressure, or, him panicking and getting rid of the ball either via a short checkdown or throwing a ball before the wr has fully developed his route. He also doesn’t often “throw guys open.” He has to see them open, which turn leads to throwing too late, allowing coverages to catch up. Long story short, he doesn’t have great feel as a passer. But he is a damn good runner. Personally I’ve always felt we needed to design the offense more around that skill.
Our redzone offense is terrible. I put that on the staff.

I could not agree more in this statement. Neal has had 4 seasons to prove himself and he has not done much at all to improve. He looks great and has a big arm but as we all know that doesn't mean much when it comes to winning games. I think with Riley being from Muncie it has given him a lot more time per se to hang onto the starting spot as well as the fact that they having had much talent at that position since Keith left. It is hard to judge though because how many other MAC teams have that great of talent at that position too but they seem to find a way to make it work.

Everyone has their opinions on things but personally, I think last night was on the players. Coaches cannot control a QB missing a wide open WR for a touchdown and then the next play the RB fumbles a handoff... or the defense just missing tackle after tackle, or Plitt running around like no one is around him and fumbles... at some point someone needs to make a play or just not make a play and take a negative yardage play so we don't turn the ball over. The defense had 5 turnovers I think and the offense just kept giving the ball back with stupid turnovers. It's tough to watch.

Tough start for Tye Evans. He only gets one play and it is a fumble on the handoff. I kind of wish the staff got him back out there to build some confidence.

Ball State is not that bad in offensive categories in the MAC but they are not good and scoring offense and efficiency.
I know that some of it is the players inherited and some of it is injuries. However, the head coach worked with one of the best offenses in the NFL at the time and the current one is Vanilla. Not like Breyer's vanilla but Great Value vanilla.

I didn't watch very much of last night. Just sighed a lot when I did and then turned it.

Well, college teams don’t normally throw deep balls with a minute left up 38-13. Not with the starter still out there. IMO, that showed the true class of the UT coach. Coaches with class, as we have, go to a Victory Formation and end the game with class. UT sucks!

I didn't see any of it but Toledo guys said that BSU kept calling time out late in the game so they felt if Ball State was still fighting, Toledo should too.

Call a timeout when we're up 24 under 2 minutes left and we'll throw deep on your ass. That'll teach ya! Kinda bush league but whatever.

Maybe I'd have been mad had I seen it but Ball State has lost the last 3 games by an average of 30.67 points. Neu has more to be upset about than this.

Get our own house in order and stop being down 30 all the time. It feels like about half the players have quit on Neu and the other half are still trying. Defense hasn’t shown up since the second half of the cmu game.
