Who saddled Whitford with all these un-self-motivated kids anyway? Cmon Sherm, you can't blame the coach for the players he recruits, can you? Whitford needs a serious dose of the ability to evaluate mindset and will in addition to talent. He's recruited "nice" players in terms of disposition and talent, but that doesn't get you championships. What it does get you is seasons that consistently go off the rails at some point because your players A: aren't good enough, they are just nice players, and B: your players aren't tough enough, mentally or physically, they are just "nice." We have no great players, no bell cows. We thought maybe we had one in Persons, and he IS of the bulldog type, but his talent level is limited. He'd have been really effective if there were other players on the floor who could shoot and handle the ball well. Instead he basically was on his own out there for 3 years. Did the best he could. Yes, he could flake out at times, but he always went hard. We can't say that about the other guys. Teague has the talent to dominate, but not the motor. (and lacks a coach who knows how to maximize his talent) Whit needs to learn how to discern which guys have motors and which ones tend to coast. Which ones step up in the big moments and which ones shrink. Any coach can go out and recruit kids who get 15 points a game in high school and make all star teams. That kind of thing has been cheapend. Some would say that's a product of Whitford being a lazy recruiter and not a guy willing to dig deeper. The winning coaches get kids who hit the big shots in the big moments, or get tough rebounds or defensive stops. They will their teams to wins, they never stop playing hard. And smart. They don't wilt or coast. I suspect Bumbalough has the attributes you really need, but we'll see if his talent level will be good enough. Some say he's the real deal, others question if he'll be able to defend quicker or bigger guards. We have too many kids who can look good in high school but can't match the intensity/grit/talent level required to win championships at the D1 level. We all know whitford hasn't had the go to big (I don't think he really wants one, not his style of play) but he also hasn't brought in the type of PG needed. We've just had a mismash of ok players who all do basically the same thing and none of whom can shoot. We also need a different strength and conditioning program, but I've heard through the grapevine that Whitford doesn't see that as a problem. What ya gonna do when the head coach can't tell what's needed where?

I thought O'Gara's article this morning was a little more tell it like it is/not afraid to step on toes than folks who've covered BSU in the past.

I think Mallers is going to immensely step up Teague has all the talent in the world but has no motor and is often not engaged.. Gunn can not play D at all. Mallers im not sure what he can do to improve

Mallers isn’t going to be a major factor. He is what he is— a nice player with limitations. Like most of the roster. But he does work hard and can get a little better and be more consistent at least.

I have heard Acree is pretty good and BUmbalough will at least be fun to watch We are physically and mentally soft. That is never going to change until Whitford is gone. We were thrown around like ragdolls last night. Teague and Moses had 3 rebounds between them. Whenever BG decided to post up, we were always on their back and were too soft to get around. I see nothing in the coming recruits and what we already have that is going to change that. Whitford has no feel for what it takes to have a successful mid major program. He is either too stupid or stubborn to make the necessary changes to turn this sinking ship around. We had one player that had the ingredients of what it takes to play in big games and he is graduating. I am fed up of contributing to the University of my entertainment dollars. Just like the world we live in today, there is no sense of urgency with the BOT or higher ups to improve this shit hole we call an athletic department. Most of us would be fired on the spot for performing this poorly and rightfully so. I just can’t fathom anyone with any competitive spirit would think all is well with Ball State Athletics.

Ok guys is Whit at point he will bring in even as walk on Parker Hazen? His JC stats were only fair (8.5 ppg & 6.7 rebs IA West) & I suspect he will have tough time getting scholarship offers at a D1. He is no different player than his brother to me but if Teague moves late we may need a stretch for a body.
