Just thought I'd throw this out there. If Neu is a lock for an extension, I figure there's a possibility BSU could buy out one contract this year, and that likely might be Whitford.
So what would it take for you to agree to keep Whitford around? A MAC regular season title that is convincing enough that we would get a call from the NIT, and I would agree. I'm not at all optimistic about that happening, but if he pulled that off, I'd say he's upped his game from its past level.

He must have a big year which I’d define as best MAC record during the regular season or MaC tournament championship

And no reason to think we have a really bad season. Good reasons to say no choice above makes sense. Breathing at the end of season might be enough to continue. A really bad year might be enough to raise money for the buyout. A lot of talk about the team failing badly, I think that's what it would take. Can't vote as a result.

20 wins and a strong MAC title run, plus a good post season tournament. However, I agree that Ball U will never buyout a contract.

Whit ain’t going no where. The administration doesn’t care about winning that much. Even if Beth feels a change is needed.

That is all relative to resources available, and to other needs. Sure, winning is important, as are other things, but even having decided a change is desirable, how do you decide THIS program's priority. And no matter the priority you may be unable to make a change if there is not several hundred thousand dollars extra sitting around.

He'll win his 18-20 games and say that this year could be the year and win enough that doesn't get people excited but doesn't make the people that sign the checks want to get rid of someone who wins 20 games. He'll also say that they're going to play 'really fast'. He's not going anywhere. Wow, I'm sad for typing this but I think it true.

Simple. Just win “enough” and be a like a likable enough guy who graduates his players and doesn’t embarrass you and all that stuff. Mearns is a PR guy, he likes good “stories”. He doesn’t want conflict. Look at how he fought the BOT on Papa John. Look at how he expressed such great admiration for Neu after Neu thanked the band after the Wmu game last year. Look at all the initiatives he’s pushing that not everyone feels comfortable with that I won’t get into boy it’s good touchy feely keep students happy stuff. He’s not going to fire Whitford or Neu unless he HAS to.

I would need to see nearly 100% of fires clicked this year. I am reasonable though, if one or two small fires are missed, but the big ones are all clicked, I could see keeping him. I can also accept a sliding scale involving clicked fires and levels at which we are on it.
But until I see some evidence to the contrary, I think BSU is fine with just a few fires clicked.

Just good enough it doesn’t force them to make a move but not so good we either have to pay more, or lose a coach and have to replace him/her.

So are we really at the point where — whether it be Neu or Whitford or any other coach we might not want to have as a coach anymore — we just let them coach out their contract and then say goodbye?

So are we really at the point where — whether it be Neu or Whitford or any other coach we might not want to have as a coach anymore — we just let them coach out their contract and then say goodbye? If that’s the directive, Colonel Sandy could do that job from home in his spare time. Heck, save some money. I can do that for $10 parking vouchers at home games.

We don’t say goodbye after their contract is up, we just extend them rather than hire a new coach.
