Oh different would things have been If she’d opened the checkbook a little and gotten out of the way. I am not sure that was a checkbook thing, I think she was trying to make an impression with some East Coast chin-pullers. Sort of the same thing she did with her Green Energy boondoggle. I always thought an interesting study would be to calculate just how much tax payer money JAG spent in a failed attempt to create an image and pump-up her resume. I don’t disagree.

So, I'm hearing that we need to rise to the top of the MAC by out-spending the rest of the MAC? Is that you all's idea? Honestly, it has to be said that you guys are idiots. We already lose $10 million a year on football...and that's not enough? Basketball is not inherently as totally hopeless as football here, but with the caliber of administrators BSU has had for the last 20 years it's almost as hopeless. The same stale ideas and incompetent people would only waste any additional money they might be given to spend.
If we had a competent, innovative administration, we would actually need LESS money to try some new things that might actually work.
Not saying you're wrong, but where do you get the <$10million> shortfall each year?

I agree. We will get rid of football someday. The question is, will we do it proactively, or will we be forced to do it? Sadly, I think we all know the answer. I don’t see us getting rid of football, they are in the process of building an indoor facility. You see, that's the kind of logical thinking we can't have around here. Seriously, BSU (and other MAC schools) will be forced to quit playing the FBS football charade at some point. My point is this: Wouldn't you rather be proactive in making such a move than market forces bringing it upon you?

Not saying you're wrong, but where do you get the <$10million> shortfall each year? Good question. The numbers are not always easy to find. Recent information suggests my usual figure of $10 million is too low and out of date. If you google around, you will usually find that BSU, and other MAC schools take in about 6 or 8 million less for football than they spend. Then if you consider that several women's sports (programs which have basically zero interest outside of the athletes and their families) are made necessary because of title IX and the huge number of male football scholarship. This takes the total cost of football up to $10 million or beyond.
link here are some numbers for athletics as a whole.

There you go.
Dropping FB would take not just "innovative thinking" but BOT approval over heavy alumni questioning. Dropping Women's programs might then be possible under legal restraints, but I doubt you are right that nobody would care about it and it would be easy.

Dropping Women's programs might then be possible under legal restraints, Ummmmmmmmmmmm......................Actually dropping 85 female scholarships would be mandatory. It's odd how many people forget that rule works both ways.

Sorry, I couldn't resist in case you haven't noticed my avatar. I was once a member of one of those now defunct programs.

The MAC has tried playing football every night of the week to try and stay relevant. It hasn’t worked. It’s appalling to see the stands with no one there. There are no story lines for the announcers to embellish. There are no “name” players to promote. “Cradle of Coaches” is just a phrase from the past nowadays.
Pull the plug on this travesty. The conference headquarters has got to be the only part this charade that is showing positive cash.
If our blessed university is truly in the dire financial straits that I keep reading about on here, then any board or president should be be held accountable for running such a deficit in one particular area while making cuts in other worthwhile areas of the institution.
This “front porch” of the university scam has outlived it’s usefulness as a valid excuse.

There are lots of places to cut. All diversity and multicultural crap would be a good place to start. The University is building a multiculti center. That money could be better spent on something worhtwhile or better yet,not spent at all.

I could not agree more Tarheel; maybe then we could hire the bb coach that many desire! Even if we put all our eggs in a basketball basket, you can’t play 18 of your 28 games against MAC opponents every year and consider yourself ready to play the other conferences. Besides that; Not once have I looked forward to a MAC basketball or football game and said to myself “I can’t wait to go to that______(fill in the MAC blank) game and beat those _______(fill in the MAC mascot blank)!” After all these 45+ years, there is no annual MAC rivalry between BSU and any other school. The Mid American Conference is failing it’s members in almost every aspect of their management. I dare to say that the conference has gotten significantly “competitive worse” since we tied ourselves to the ESPN devil.

Have any of you guys looked at the coaching contract database displayed on midmajormadness.com? Interesting to see Whitford’s contract is like the only one with no “supplemental” bonuses based upon wins, etc. Maybe if those incentives were a part of a contract we’d see some more fire in his coaching style?
I know if I were a coach I would show more urgency during games if I knew some sort of bonus could come out of it.

I don't why it isn't on that database.
