A necessary moveSandy is right. But if I were going to do it, I'd have paid him more, something like what we want to pay a coach with the next hire. If he is a success over next 2 years he goes anyway and we get a better buyout. I consider the downside where we would have to buy out as less likely. The cynics can say we have no will to buy out in any case, and are doomed, but if we aren't willing to pay more than 275K we are doomed whatever happens. If we want a real upgrade we need to have the best paid coach in the MAC. The bright spot for the naysayers this at the least insures a new coach will have a good roster to work with, and only has to go out and get a few of those easy to get quality big strong guys!

Surprised Dambrot is not getting more. Ohio is sure proud of their coach!

I find it interesting that an extension doesn't include a raise in his base salary, even a measly 5 grand. How common is that?
I do wonder what the "tweaks" Sandy refers to are. Perhaps bonuses related to MAC regular season and tournament performance, along with any other postseason performance?
Five years seems like a long time, but Sandy's on the inside and I'm sure he know a heckuva lot more than I do. I'm thinking that the General and Sandy have evaluated Whit's plans for recruiting a championship caliber front line and have found it acceptable.

Unbelievable. Zero MAC tourney wins and gets an extension. You can't have less than zero.
Is it just not possible for AD's to learn from their predecessors' mistakes? Unbelievable.
Anyways, it makes a very clear statement as to what our standards of excellence are.

Anyways, it makes a very clear statement as to what our standards of excellence are Sandy could have felt he had to do it. He might even feel the way you do, but even you said you wouldn't fire him. If you don't fire him, you can't hamper him either. Sandy is being evaluated too and cannot be seen as a disabler. He probably should have done it earlier if he thought it might affect recruiting.

Not what I would have done but this is why Sandy gets paid so hopefully its the right decision, if not were screwed again.

It is really odd there was not some kind of raise though I'm guessing this move was meant to just send the message that he's backed by his boss and that recruits don't need to wonder if he's going to be around for their time. I think a raise won't come until after a very successful season, then a possible renegotiation. I'm hoping that is next year, year after at the latest. If not, then those who remained very concerned will have been correct.

My initial reaction is that I'm a little surprised by the move. I thought the AD and school would have a big decision to make, just not until next spring. And Whit's ability to round out this recruiting class over the summer, the 2016-17 season, and success in the fall signing period would all play important roles in that decision.
I like Whitford as a guy, and I want him to succeed as a coach. Strides have been made, and I think he is the best coach of our last four (including himself). But the jury is still out for me. We still have some glaring roster holes for next season. If those aren't filled this summer, a little worried we could take a step backwards or perhaps just plateau, especially against a tougher schedule. This move seemed more premature than necessary for me. If the team has a good 2016-17 season, makes some noise in Cleveland, and has a good fall signing class, then this move would have been necessary next April. But not 100% sure it was needed now. And we saw with Taylor that we can't afford a big buyout if the decision should backfire.

Fuck Ball State basketball. The good news is you will now have more time for Ball State football! I always thought you were a fan who was fighting for what you believed, and hoped for the best, but since you aren't anymore, look at this way, think of the fun you will have saying I told you so if disaster strikes. Or, like Donald Trump if you aren't right, then it was just your "spokesman" and that wasn't really you speaking. Or, you might just be overreacting.

That very phrase is the magic key to huge success for the program. You did it Sherm! You opened the vault of championships! ;-)

I suspect Whit pushed for more money for his assistants and his will be performance based financial incentives which is smart in my opinion.
I am surprised by the low salaries in the MAC and would have guessed no HC in the league would be under $300,000!
