As a BSU basketball fan, I have a Masters, a Doctorate and several other advanced degrees that they don't even have names for in the field of finding interest in dismal sports seasons. So, I'm having no problem at all following the Colts' current cesspool of a season with some interest. By the way, if you are a Colts fan and still rooting for pointless wins, you are far too stupid to usefully participate here, so just do all of us a favor and stay out.
Below are the teams with 2 or less wins at this point. (Note - There are a ton of 3 win teams that could still be a factor) First number is the team's DVOA power ranking (from Football Outsiders), then the record, then the rank of the team's remaining schedule. So you see - GOOD NEWS - the Colts have the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL.
Unfortunately, the Colts have wins over both of the two 0-8 teams. You may be wondering how the colts can be ranked ahead of these two teams in the power rankings? Easy - both wins were just 3 point wins at home, which don't create much, if any, separation in the rankings. And then the colts were on the receiving end of a few serious ass-kickings that were quite remarkably embarrassing considering the general parity in the league these days.
But anyway, with the head-to-head wins, the browns and niners are effectively 2.5 games ahead of the colts in the race to the bottom. Meaning that one of those teams would have to go 3-5 the rest of the way, while the colts lose out. Possible, but not too likely. A much brighter possibility is overtaking the Giants, who are a better team, have an easier schedule, and in the event of a tie, you would have to like the colts tie-breaker chances given the weakness of their wins.
29 49ers 0-8 18
30 Browns 0-8 6
25 Giants 1-6 8
32 Colts 2-6 1
24 Bucs 2-5 17
Let's take a look at the Colts remaining schedule. Power ranking for each opponent noted. Obviously the two biggest threats for wins are the Titans and Broncos at home. Those are key games. Must-lose games. I feel really good about 6 losses in the other 6 games. I'm hoping that consecutive beatdowns by the Steelers and at Houston have the colts completely downtrodden by the time they host Tennessee.
at 8 Texans
1 Steelers
20 Titans
at 7 Jags
at 10 Bills
18 Broncos
at 12 Ravens
8 Texans
So pull hard for the Giants and Bucs from here on out, to put the Colts in the 3 spot. Hope against hope that the Browns and/or Niners might go 3-5, giving the Colts a chance at a top two pick. The overall parity in the league is so strong right now that the colts, as sorry as they are, can still win a game or two. Plus Pagano has shown a strange and disgusting aptitude to produce pointless, draft position lowering wins at the end of seasons. So, there are still strong reasons for non-brain-dead colts fans to follow the season with intelligent interest.
Feel free to speculate also on potential draftees and trade possibilities. Best case scenario would be for a QB starved team to fall in love with some college kid and give away their whole draft to the colts for the 2 or 3 spot.
If you are still cheering for Colts wins, do yourself a favor. Find someone with strong-looking legs. Ask them to kick you in the backside as hard as they can. Hopefully this will reposition your brain from the bottom of your spine, where it is now, to the top of your spine where it belongs.
