A couple of observations. Near the 5:00 Mark Mallers got beat on three straight rebounds (two were free throws) simply because he didnt box out. During the same time when CMU was pressing we had guards trapped in the corners. Even i know thats the easiest place to defend on the court.

We are only five games in on the eighteen game MAC schedule but I thought we looked kind of gassed last night. Also a little mentally fatigued maybe? Not sure maybe it was TP not being at full speed or Mallers playing out of sync but something was off, IMO.
I am a little worried about the loss of Walker in our rotation more than I thought I would be. Ish and Gunn really looking like freshman and aren’t giving us much. Just minutes to rest a few guys. That left us basically 7 deep.
7 road games and 6 home. That’s it for the regular season. Hard to believe. Go Cards.

Those are legit concerns, RC. Have to wonder if the emotions surrounding what happened with Hollywood plus the ridiculousness of Walker are wearing on these guys now. Throw in Persons being dinged up half the time for various reasons, the strength and conditioning program being questionable, and heavy expections of success and maybe this team is struggling to find itself still. We seem to lapse mentally fairly easily and as RC said, seem gassed. They've got to find a way to push through all this and come out the other side a better.

Was checking our conference only stats just now. Through five games, Persons is 1-12 from three and 11-18 from the FT line. Those are not TP numbers. Something is wrong. He is either banged up, sick or maybe both but he hasn’t been the same player for a month or more. Since the Valpo game when he scored 23 plus the buzzer beater, He’s had 13, 5 , 10, 9, 8, 16, 13 & 12 last night. That’s 10.5 a game well below his average of 15.5 last season. Hope it’s just the flu or something minor. Kid is tough as nails and he is the heart and soul of this team. We will only go as far as he can go. Need him at 100 percent playing with his swagger to be a legit contender for a bye and to make any kind of noise in Cleveland. Glad Tyler is stepping up. Time for Kiapway to grow a pair and start playing like a senior.
BTW, four of the next five on the road before we get a stretch of 5 out of 6 at home. Need to go 3-2 at least until that home stand.

I think more concerning than TP missing threes lately is his unwillingness to shoot the three. There were multiple times last night when the ball movement was great and swung to him for an open look and he passed on the shot....I understand trying to make a pass for a possible better shot but these were open, step into threes. He needs to take those shots to help the overall offense.

With his game prep, you just never know.

Hard to believe, but it almost looks like TP has lost his confidence. Can't imagine that given he is our swagger. Or, he just doesn't feel good. I do like that his assist and rebound totals were up, so he was finding other ways and getting teammates involved.

rm's friend pointed out what many have been saying in various ways on this site for years. IN SHORT...a lack of fundamentals. Very few block out...NO ONE follows his shot...whatever happened to the quick outlet pass that leads to a three on two fast break?...arm blocking a passing lane to force the offensive player beyond his comfort zone (no aggressive defense)...too much dribbling...back door cuts that set up easy lay ups...HORRIBLE shot selection...I could go on and on and on...I do not care if you are Whit or Gene Hackman these and many more are basics that great teams carry out without thinking because it is drilled into them. It is called GREAT coaching. It is the boring drills that nobody liked but the coach would make the team go through to hone those skills. Sorry guys but is so frustrating to see this kind of play year after year, I have to vent. Go Cards.

I do like that his assist and rebound totals were up, so he was finding other ways and getting teammates involved. There may have been some letdown earlier after a very hot streak, but he has suffered that ankle injury and when your legs aren't rock solid, both quick movement and long range shot suffer, and you just can't always finish as strong either. His defense may have suffered slightly, but then that isn't exactly what makes him our leader. I don't really think he has any issues with desire and not much with confidence, excepting maybe some caution on the injury. If I think back he found a lot passes that led to baskets, some easy, but I'd say he was a better PG in this game than I really expected, except shooting the 3. Fortunately a couple of our senior shooters seem to have found the range. I am not giving up on Francis either.

BTW, four of the next five on the road before we get a stretch of 5 out of 6 at home. Need to go 3-2 at least until that home stand. Miami, Kent, Toledo, Eastern are those road games. Toledo and Eastern, we will be underdogs, Kent even money perhaps. Any wins there are big time wins. And. In any case Miami, Kent are dangerous close games on the road. Let's play one at a time and go get Miami. THEN we talk 3-2. I sure don't expect 4-1 in this stretch, that would be championship caliber not a team struggling to regain the edge. Of course, as greedy fans, what we may "need" to be second in the MAC is to upset Toledo and at least go 3-2. This last win was important, holding home court with Akron important, and anything more we get on the road is good news. Your best point is that we then have a long home stretch where we can make some hay and get ready for a real run toward the finish line. And, the schedule doesn't seem to be too brutal going in the tournament, should give us a decent chance to be ready.

I will also say I think this was Tylers best game as a card. Its what I expected we would get every night from his JR year on. I hope this is not another good game and he goes away again scenario. If he can do this most every game we become a much better team We all agree to that. Of course being BSU basketball fans, if he does do the job we'll be reaming him the rest of the season for not doing this all along, then moaning and groaning about Walker being gone, since if he were here we'd be really strong at guard. And of course that leaves us hoping Francis and Ish can somehow come through to replace Walker. And if he doesn't have great games, then we'll just ream him for same old reasons... That is the essence of BSU basketball fandom. Moaning and groaning about personnel, blaming the coach for everything from poor recruiting to failure to do what you usually do well (for example getting on Mallers ass about blocking out. Hell the kid is usually up to his ass in alligators inside and gets a hell of lot of rebounds). Yep, moaning and groaning and hoping for players to come through, that has been our life. That, and of course never looking at good news without finding a dark lining to that silver cloud.

I'm still concerned that our bench is getting shorter. No Walker and little production on either end from Kip, Gunn & Ish leaves us thin and really makes our margin for error razor-thin. I don't like it.

After reading the comments I am in agreement we were out rebounded by a team I thought going in was one of the worst in the west. (NIU to me is the worst)I think that Whitford as a coach is primarily a recruiter & definitely does not teach fundamentals. I disagree with most people's thinking regarding the next 4 games. I think we should get 4 wins & surprisingly feel Whitford is a better coach than 3 of the 4 opponents coaches. I look for us to come out in one of those games & hit 45% + on 3s. Moses & Teague both look good to me against the opponents if they will go inside. (I have not felt that way in any of the prior MAC games except CMU). Reality check I agree with the frosh call but think most frosh have a drop off around 20 games in & most come back in a couple of weeks.

Tyler is easily our best athlete and has the potential to really breakout!
RC and I see it similar but I really think Kip hitting a late 12 footer and then a 3 could really help his confidence.
Teague is such a better player in the low post or running the baseline.
Gunn hit a big corner 3 and played well for limited minutes just coming back.
Persons will be fine.
