I think at some time he could be terminated if BSU never progresses. It just won't this year or next year given the 2 extensions. Same should apply to Colonel Sandy, but won’t.

F it Im going to be to the New Ad and name myself Basketball and football coach. Save the School some money. I mean Hell Ive coached every sport at a youth level. If I can coach those little bastards I can coach anything. I can recruit with the best of them. I also admit my flaws and I am not proud to ask for help. You guys are going to be my assistants and support staff. We got this shit

Bottom line it would be nice to have an AD that would set bar quite a bit higher for extensions. Tom Collins's extension of Taylor in 2009 is a perfect example of the bar being set too low. It appears every BSU AD is making these extensions based on hope for the future and that model so far has pretty much not been successful for 16 years.

The Taylor extension was hope that their cheap hire strategy had worked, not firing him had some reasons, allowing him to play out the string was ended up mostly about budget.

Oh please you could give Sandy a $500,000 budget and he would still hire a clown. Shitbird is making roughly twice what Chris Holtmann made at Gardner Webb. It's about hiring talented people, not just throwing money at a problem.

Budgetary reasons or not it's time for the administration to live and learn from last mistakes on extensions. I'm not saying bar is NCAAs or you're fired because even in the 90s they only went to NCAAs about 1/3 of time but it's clear the bar needs to be higher than where it is.

It's about hiring talented people, not just throwing money at a problem. BSU has never been known to throw money at a problem, oh, except paying off failed coaches who were overpaid at relatively modest salary (FB and BB) ...Which in every case left less money to pay those actually coaching and influenced our BB coaching search decisions several times. Which by the way makes the point that hiring cheap assistants without D1 HC experience often fails. BTW Chris Holtman was hired at G-W 8 years ago as HC, but after being an assistant since 2002 or so. Hardly a case where G-W searched high and low. And. BTW. He started his HC career there 13-41. You'd have been calling to fire him if he was the BSU coach. After ONE good (CIT first round, not NIT, NCAA) year went to Butler 4 years ago at a salary higher than that which our coach will likely ever make here. I suppose you could be saying G-W in its penny pinching strategy was lucky to get one good year for 3, and that's what you want in a coach, but I believe you are saying something else. That part about hiring talented people, which Butler did after they had some evidence of it, actually requires spending money. Successful coaches just don't come cheap. G-W is a poor example of how to find an immediate impact program changing coach. Which I assume you favor.

I'd like to see what kind of applicant pool we would have if we were offering anything like 500K. And had a roster with some talent and an attractive job for the incoming coach. The last time we had anything like that when we hired(adjusted for inflation), we hired Rick Majerus. Then retained Hunsaker at a discount, Ray at a discount, and thought it was easy to win at BSU. Subsequent attempts at that strategy have had less success, largely because we just can't find talented people who want to work for that amount at a program in trouble. I suspect we'll need to have at least that $500K budget when we hire the next coach if we hope to continue progress. At least we'll have some talent on the roster to attract a coach if Whitford continues recruiting well.

Where did BSU throw money at a coaching hire? Where did G-W get an immediate turn around on the cheap? How often does that work? What I see is one school that got a talented coach with experience, but paid for it. Butler hired not cheap and got a very good coach, who left for even more money. Seems to me money is important. Try your smart move of finding talented coaches on the cheap, that is a big gamble. I say no, offer good salary for a good job, you attract talent, and choosing a winner is far more likely.

The only comment I will add to this debate is it comes down to choice. WHO is choosing your coach and whether you CHOOSE to invest the dollars necessary to hire a proven winner.
If BSU decided to invest what is necessary, I'm of the belief our President and the BOT could generate the $$ to support it. The wild card is who is leading your athletic department to make the right hire. If it's a Bubba Cunningham or Bill Scholl, you're chances are pretty good.

Do we even have an athletic director now? Can you even tell with Sandy?
