We ALWAYS want to extend out of panic, not out of earning it.

It sets wrong message to award a coach a 3 year extension in 2016 based off a 10-8 MAC campaign in which BSU didn't even make it to Cleveland. It sends a message that Sandy accepts being o.k. to slightly above average.

I could of understood extending Whitford in 2016 if he had signed a 3 year deal, but he originally signed a 5 year deal. And then extending him another 3 plus another year in the 2017 offseason more or less gives him job security thru 19-20 given the potential buyout cost.

When he was hired I said " He is a guy who can get you to twenty wins under ideal circumstances, but that's it". I still would have fired him after year 2.

I’m guessing we aren’t going to a pay to play tourney this year. They didn’t really want to last year.

I would say the general idea of an extension after the 2015-16 season wasn't terrible.
He'd just finished 3 of 5 years of his contract. 21 wins. Plenty of flaws to find, but arguable improvement and the likelihood of another decent season ahead. If he wasn't extended after Season 3, he would have been after Season 4.
However, the length was excessive and, with that in mind, there was absolutely no reason to extend again after the 2016-17 season.
Given where we are right now, whether we see a rebound this year or the season turns into a dumpster fire, the 2018-19 season is Whitford's make-or-break season, IMO. With most key parts back and the addition of Hazen and Walton, it should be Whitford's best team.
If all we get is what we've gotten so far, it's time to let him go, even with the three years left on his contract. I think the key with letting him go at that time is you give the new coach some decent parts to build around in Hazen, Walton, Teague, El-Amin, Mallers, Gunn. The cupboard ain't completely bare at least.

I cannot see Mark Sandy terminating Whit for any reason, save scandal, or BSU eating money.

If or once Sandy or someone figures out there needs to be a change, I'd argue it's more costly to let Whitford's contract run out as a lame duck coach while the program reverts to terrible levels, than it would be pay off a few $100,000 and not be forced to start over.

It’s just brutal that we go through this with a Whitford team every year and can figure it’ll happen again next year, and the next. And they’ll continue to be lethargic and lack energy and intensity. They mirror the coach.
