A quick glance on the article about Notre Dame installing geothermal systems revealed a sentence indicating Nd wants to capitalize on long term cost savings.

Ball States project payoff vs traditional boiler is now over 100 years. I agree they may want to do that, but actually doing it are two different things. Geothermal can produce some modest savings in smaller structures that are sealed almost airtight.

It’s definitely not a short term pay off.

I am no big fan of the geothermal, but I have heard other figures for the alternative project, I think it was the 2005 legislature budgeted 45 mil for replacing the boilers. BSU says it was going to cost 70-80 mil, not the 20 mil cited above.
Geo at 90 mil or 100 mil is still more expensive to install. However. University officials do claim over 2 mil a year savings on fuel. So the payback would be reasonable. Especially given the state funding.
I am not sure where the project cost for boilers at 20 mil cited comes from, but I did find a news story with the figures above, it's on the internet, must be true!
My gripes are never being so sure about the assumptions in the operating savings number, and the fact the system still isn't working right, much less future maintenance.
If halftime has a source, I'd enjoy showing it the next time somebody brags about saving money.
I do know the old system and distribution of steam heat was very inefficient and needed major overhaul and was expensive to maintain too, not just new boilers were required, maybe that is some of the difference?

The cost savings you are quoting were early after instillation when Nat Gas prices were substantially higher. Besides 50 years isn't reasonable anyway. Also why is okay to bilk taxpayers. Hell I think that's even worse. This project is a big part of the reason Jo Ann was canned.

"I want other people to continue to pay the huge costs associated with providing me my ___________" is basically the argument for anything the government does.

Hopefully Mearns will not allow Sandy to sign off on any more coaching extensions before his retirement is official at the end of June.
