Hell I’d forgotten OU even went to the sweet 16. That’s the impact that made on me.

Problem with those basketball tourney runs by MAC teams? Long time ago. Football has had the more recent success with National recognition. Mac basketball has been silent for quite awhile. OK, so let's use Ohio's Sweet 16 run in 2012, which is just a year earlier than the NIU Orange Bowl. Beat No. 4-seed Michigan and lost to No. 1-seed North Carolina in OT. As for the NIU Orange Bowl, the score might have been close in the third, but FSU killed them. Total offense FSU 534 yards, NIU 259. FSU owned time of possession by 8 minutes. May be a respectable loss to some folks but that's a pretty thorough beating to me. Another nice run for sure but honestly I remembered the ohio part but would have no Idea who they beat.

Does anyone remember what year the MAC doubled down on their stupidity and forced member institutions to make a substantially larger "investment" in football ? I am thinking it was around 2004. Based on stadium expansions and with the help of some documents and old media guides I have, my memory is that happened mid 1990's. It was actually in response to the NCAA rule that the school needed to have either a stadium that seated 30,000 or have 15,000 average attendance once every 3 years. Ball State Stadium at the time only held 16,319. The MAC threatened to expel members who could not meet one of those standards. The MAC would have lost their D1-A standing if it did not comply. Most MAC schools bit the bullet and made massive stadium expansions with temporary bleacher type stands to get to 30,000. I have a couple different architectural renderings from the mid 90's of plans to expand Ball State Stadium to 30,000 to meet the stadium size rule. Those never happened. Instead in 1997 Ball State temporarily rented stands that had been removed from Indianapolis Motor Speedway and placed them on the east side of the stadium to raise the capacity to 21,581. They then lowered ticket prices to $3. I think a season ticket was $15. Those price reductions along with significant corporate ticket purchases allowed BSU to average 15,000 and meet the standard. The NCAA has since backed off on the 30,000 stadium size rule and many of the MAC schools that installed those temporary bleacher type stands have removed them and the stadium sizes have decreased to around 25,000. BSU removed the speedway stands and put up similar permanent stands that exist on the east side of the stadium today. In 2001 the Fisher football complex was completed but did not lead to a significant capacity increase as other bleachers had to be removed. 16 million was raised and in 2007 the major stadium enhancement project was completed and with the addition of the grass hill seating the capacity reached it's current level of 22,500. Stadium rendering from 1996. That is how I remember things going down. I may be off on some details.

The other thing is we are MAC fans so of course we all remember these outliers. You go ask joe blow the causal sports about any of these and they are not going to remember any of them except maybe the 2017 WMU team and only them because it was a coupleyears ago

The thing that gives football the advantage in national recognition when of these things happens is the length of time it actually takes for it to happen. WMU and NIU were both receiving National recogition from about week 6 on. They had 6 weeks of being the team to burst the bubble or crack the big 6 then another month till the bowl game where they were hyped. The tournament happens so fast and is then forgotten I honestly can not tell you off the top of my head who even won the NCAA tournament last year.
Someone also brought up Our win over ND in Basketball this year. MAC football knocks off a big name almost every year which for at least a week garners national attention

Most people other than bsu and Nd fans probably have no clue we beat them in basketball. Beat them in football and the whole world would know. (We’re gonna lose by 5 td)

I will say this I am almost always wearing a Ball State hat and several times strangers(ou tof state) and I have been chatting and they will say "yea BSU has had a couple good football teams." No one has ever mentioned the sweet 16 run or even MAUI it was just to long ago.

Buffalo loses only Clark for next year. They will be the best next year as well as they have much more overall talent than we have, Gotta increase our overall athletic talent if we are going to compete with them. That have quickness, big bodies and they can shoot and defend. Still playing second fiddle to the MAC East.

Buffalo won. Hopefully they show up for the MAC I really like Perkins for Buffalo Yea back to that as expected Buffalo won. My wife who casually follows sports said an interesting but very true statement a minute ago. "When Buffallo walked into the arena I thought to myself man they are big." "They just did not look like the other Mac teams."

The talent gap between us and Buffalo is big. And to top it off, they are more physical and stronger.

Yeah they don't play small ball yet they still shoot better than we do. We have the potential to be a complete dumpster fire next season.

I honestly do not believe Whitford can or will recruit the type of athletes needed to beat Buffalo. Emu has most of their guys back too. We have no one on the roster who can check Minnie. Or Thompson. Plus we have major questions at guard. Whit needs to find a couple miracles in the spring. You know groce will reload Akron and Kent will have studs. So far our recruiting for next year is meh. I know we have Hazen and Walton sitting out, but so far heralded transfers have not been what was expected. I’ve heard Walton will be good but I’ve heard mixed reports on Hazen. We’ll see. We need a really good 2 and a strong interior presence. Until we can guard quick perimeter players we won’t get any better.
