I'm afraid our fouling issues are a reflection of our roster issues and are not going away. Who is our quickest perimeter defender? Who is our best rim protector? Recruiting has consequences.
"Wow 4 games in the season and so many naysayers? Calm down 2-2 could easily be 4-0. Give them 10 or more games then judge how ever you want. Be a fan on the fan board."
The Maya Angelou shtick doesn't really work on a fan board burdened with 13 years of frustration.

"I disagree in comparing the teams this year and last. We are better. The issue is how much."
Other than more players, I do not see that much difference than last season. We still miss a ton of freethrows, still have a mystifying inactive 'motion offense,' and still have no real defensive presence. Still waiting for a culture of change.

We still miss a ton of freethrows, still have a mystifying inactive 'motion offense,' and still have no real defensive presence. Still waiting for a culture of change. More players sounds like a big deal to me. Depth was a season long problem last year. And more players include another big plus since we have more scorers. Tyler back and Weber add a lot of outside shooting sorely lacking last year. Bo and Kiapway seem improved and doing more of the good things we saw them do only at the end of last year. We see some of the same things we don't want, I agree. Free throw shooting and trouble defending against teams going to the basket for lay ins are my big gripe. OTOH,the other big gripe from last year was the defensive collapse at the end of games which cost us so many close ones, and this year that was more true @bradley where we faded down the stretch due to lack of depth and no guard play off the bench. We have done better since and seen Kiapway and Tyler show up off the bench in the last few games, and actually held a lead and won in close games. Along with you, I want the differences to start to be a cultural change where we see BSU dictate the game more. The defense we play, in theory is supposed to provide us with more players converging on ball near the basket, and make the other team take more inefficient mid range shots. I haven't seen that as much as I'd like. The fouls may be a matter of adjusting to the new emphasis on contact, I hope the rules have not outlawed aggressive defense. Across college basketball we are seeing more points scored. We might be a little better on D than it looks. The offense is supposed to get more good quick shots and then be patient. We are having trouble getting any quick shots and are often slowed down getting the ball to half court and hardly have time to be patient with the new clock. The team works on the press at practice, but we have still let the defense slow us down and turn us over too much.

I'm still hopeful for improvement.

The ''better end'' of the 200s? Now there is something to be proud of.

We are fans or else we would not waste our time here. Its not just the 2-2 start this year most of our pessimism comes from years of watching the same thing. So far this year looks just like the last 10-12 years
Exactly, I USED to be optimistic (like Kid) about BSU basketball, now, I expect the worse. It appears to me that we aren't any better than last year. We've beat three crappy teams and lost to two mediocre to poor teams.

I see this talk that we're more talented, but it looks to me that that the on court product is the same. In other words, we're still not any good.

Judging from the limited sample of games and looking at the schedule ahead, I don't think there's any doubt Whitford will have another year. This team will play well enough against this schedule to accomplish that.
But, I think what we've seen thus far is purely a result of manpower, nothing else. Whitford has recruited well enough to improve the team to this level. Now the question is this: Can he coach them to an even higher level?
I thought last year there probably was some progress because we did see improvement in the games of Calhoun and House. And I gave the coach the benefit of the doubt otherwise because of the situations with Davis, Tyler, Kam and Turner.
The trouble is, other than having a few more warm (and supposedly talented and useful) bodies, I don't yet see much improvement in individuals or team play since last year. Coach will have the rest of this year and probably next year, at least, to show what he can do in that regard.

I'll be the first to admit that my expectations for Ball State basketball have dropped considerably from where they were in the 10 years ago. However, I am cautiously excited about the direction of the program currently. I really like the recruiting and the number of Indiana All Stars on the roster. I think we're going to be much stronger next season. I absolutely love the fact that ESPN3 is going to carry BSU basketball games this season.
For what it's worth I'm not particularly impressed with offense but good recruiting cures all ills. Ball State has some good recruits coming into the program.
I can easily see the Cardinals winning half thier games this year.
Go mighty cards!
