I realized my last post made me sound like a 'get off of my lawn' grouch. I assume the writer was just having some fun with the story. I'm not sure it comes off that way to everyone.

However you can't claim the MAC's cost structure is reasonable when they are in far worse financial shape than the majority of other FBS football conferences. I think for once we agree. This has been going on for a fairly long time. Mid Majors are hit hard. Money doesn't come from the state, revenue from operations, student fees and alumni gifts have to match cost increases. Costs to compete are not going down...and we are hitting the wall in terms of finding the revenue. State funding declines and higher costs in all areas make money tight. That increases the need to fund other priorities out of student money and alumni gifts. Tuition is already high, students are tapped out where they are borrowing money already and loans are expensive, it's not easy to raise fees. Decreased interest in attending games, and limited TV appeal makes revenue from games harder to generate.

limited TV appeal makes revenue from games harder to generate. Explain please. ESPN seems interested in the product to broadcast it and renew their contract with the MAC.

Cheap programming for ESPN late in the season during the week. What else are they showing...Ping Pong?

I said "limited" not "no" appeal. That means the value of the contract is not going to go so far up as to erase a substantial part of it(the deficit). Any money we get is good news. But, it is just not enough. We'll spend more on coaching, more on training, more on maintenance on bigger and better facilities, more on recruiting, and so on. We have to assume a rather large turn around in paid attendance and a substantially bigger contract upon renewal to "keep up" with increasing costs. Even if we do a bit better, it is continuing a large deficit.

There was also a fake bleacher report(bleecher report) twitter post last night that said Chip Kelly had agreed to coach at Ball State.. I think it was trending for a while till people figured out it was fake

ESPN (and other sport networks) is fighting a dwindling customer base with people fleeing cable and dish contracts. Their bargaining position with advertisers is diminishing and their ability to continue to increase contracts will be severely hampered going forward.

I have looked over D 1 FCS coaches and one not mentioned as a candidate who I think should be added is N Iowa's Mark Farley. He has been their head coach for 15 years and has a win over us as well as two victories over Ia State and a record of 129- 61. He has lost twice twice to Ia by a point. His teams have been ranked in the FCS top ten final poll 7 times. He has had one FCS runner up team. He was the DC at N Ia & Kansas. He was a LB at N Ia. He has been an interim AD there in the past. He coached Chris Klieman at N Ia. I look at him as another Jerry Kill. The big advantage in hiring a head coach is he can bring his staff with him if he wants. I can see Farley coming in and leading us to a win against IU next fall and a winning season. He is 52 and I could not find a current salary. He was making $220,000 in 08. I would think he would be close to Klieman in salary now.

If you are a successful D-2 coach making $350,000 or more per year why would you want to go to a ''lower'' Division 1 program that is in turmoil and underfunded in the middle of of East Central Indiana? There are many schools who have had success hiring coaches directly from the ''smaller'' college ranks. If I am at North Dakota or Northern Iowa I continue my winning ways and cherry pick the best D-1 offer from a power conference that comes my way IF I want to move. I may like the situation of winning and not facing all the pressure that comes with a big time program.

I was going to essentially say the same thing. Those programs named are fcs not d2, though, and they are better programs than Bsu. We are not underfunded, however. Under supported yes, but not underfunded. At this point all we lack is an indoor practice facility. We've been able to recruit across the country (not necessarily the right talent), our coach was paid more than our president, assistant salaries are middle of the pack and our overall budget is middle of the pack. That underfunded shot by Pete was just another lame excuse for sucking the last two years. Just like he was always saying how hard it is to win at Bsu. (After back to back bowl seasons no less). Anyway, why leave an fcs school that's always competing for national championships and plays in front of sellout crowds to come to a middling Mac school with inconsistent and fair weather support?

Unless you are ready to move up through the D1 ranks. If you are good and can recruit and motivate and are successful here, then you Have a real chance at the next level. But you have to win to get that chance. It's been done on more than one occasion at BSU.
