This was obviously done for the obsequious adoration they knew they would receive and did receive.
Based on what I have personally witnessed, there are numerous males on campus who can kick better and no doubt including several already on the football team. But are ESPN and all those media outlets going to lick your backside up and down for making your 2nd string runningback your kicker for a game? Would he be named SEC special teams player of the week for kicking off to the 35 yard line? You are assuming they DID make some effort to try out some of these, but this is not mentioned anywhere....you believe it because you want to believe it.
This is a winless team with a failed coach, facing a game as a big underdog, who had nothing to lose and a lot of publicity to gain. They didn't try to find the best kicker possible because it really doesn't matter if their kicker can't hit 40 yard field goals or execute an effective kickoff. They are going to suck either way, and lose either way, and, as it turns out, get fired either way.
By the way, I don't think it's unrelated that the guy was a terrible head coach and that he was willing to demean the game with this farcical stunt.

When considering the quality of stunts and promotions, I always consult the oracle and ask: WWVD (What Would Veeck Do?)
I'm thinking he would have gone for this, but I'm not sure this would have gone far enough. I'm thinking he might have dressed the entire soccer team and put them on the field to cover the kick. Or maybe recruited someone off the lacrosse team to play QB. I mean, hey, if Riley Neal can start at QB for the Commodores ...

Yeah, because the best way to shut down a "publicity stunt" is to fan its flames on the internet
And don't look now, some of you are so bent out of shape over it, or more likely the dreaded "fake news media" running with it, that this thread is approaching two pages... that's more than some BSU news receives here.
Look, it's really more of a footnote than a milestone, but if some of you, Vandy, the NCAA, hell even the freaking SEC want to make a big deal of it, knock yourselves out.
I really don't care, but I think it is pretty dumb. Not going to lose sleep over it. You are saying we are making a big deal out of it by just discussing it on a message board, but it has been one of the top sports stories in the past few days.

Of course it's more discussed than some BSU news, as BSU sports news tends towards the dismally depressing. And I have two other words for you in that same vein:

Vanderbilt needed a kicker. One who had met Covid restrictions as she had as an in season athlete. No reason to assume they had a better choice considering everything. And if Vanderbilt ever scores a TD maybe we'll see if she can hit an extra point. Didnt she play for Kent State and hit one last year

Well the award is for her "courage" you know.
As if we didn't know for an absolute certainty all along that she was going to receive a fawning tongue bath from the media. I would say that loving attention was more of a necessary quality than courage.
Supposedly girls around the country are encouraged by this. But not all girls are stupid and/or ignorant of biological realities. Those sharp enough to see through this charade are more likely feeling patronized and embarrassed.
I see Tweets congratulating her on "Breaking Through The Barrier." She didn't ask to walk on, nor fought to make a roster cut. She was asked to fill a void due to Covid-19, and she did the bare minimum. The over sensationalism is amazing.

Of course, it doesn't make a dime's worth of difference who kicks for that god awful Vanderbilt football team. The significant story here is how far the media will go to promote stories that back up their denial of biological and genetic differences between humans. They have been at this for a while now and I think people today would generally be very surprised when confronted with data on the actual athletic and strength gap between males and females.

Last year in youth football 4th/5th grade we had a girl sign up to play. We did our draft and at the end she was the last available player. There were several coaches who refused to have her on a team. I have a daughter that I would try and steer away from football but if she was dead set on it I would have to let her try. Well first practice comes and Helicopter Dad is there cheering and taking pictures. Just being over the top and extra annoying. Practice plays out as normal, warmups, some light drills, runnin etc. We then get to a drill where you separate your linemen into a group and everyone else becomes either a RB or a LB... You end up with 4 line men going two on two with an LB behind. RB takes the ball and try to run through. Everyone then rotates rb becomes lb, linemen flip sides etc.. Its completely random who you might line up against. The worst player might have to take out the best player etc you never know. Well every time this girl is the RB she just gets crushed.. She would just take the ball and stand there or move one step and turtle up. When she was the LB she never once engaged so I blew the whistle taught her to breakdown move her feet wrap up etc just as I would any kid. I then said do it again, she does not. I then say if you do not engage the whole team is running to the fence. She does not the whole team is now running. While thats going on Helicopter Dad storms the field talking about how Im making an example of his daughter and there is no way she should have to try and tackle the kid she did. I need to match her up against the smallest kid etc. etc.. Long story he turned me into the board and threatened to sue the league. That did not work.. She was moved to a different team where she practiced twice and then quit. No coach did any thing wrong on either team. The Dad and girl just wanted to "play" football which you cant do or you going to get hurt

I played club level soccer in high school and one team had one girl player on it. The refs totally protected her. Things that were not fouls against anyone else were fouls against her. Always drove me nuts.

It would have been interesting to see the reaction if she had gotten hurt.

He sounds like that kind of douche canoe.

There are boys whose dads force them to play some sport and it doesn't go well, either, maybe even uglier results...
Kudos to you for treating the girl like any other player who isn't ready for contact and needs coaching. Even in ancient times when I was a youth you'd have the "tom boy" who loved to play rough in any sport. I wish they had had the chance to play all sports at that age when they can be competitive. At any older age group for girls in football it is doubtful many could compete with the boys, although I saw a number of pretty athletic kids playing in the Delta girls soccer and softball who might have made HS FB teams probably all as backfield players, receivers.
I agree there are going to be handful of girls who might play FB past that age group, assuming they were inclined to do so. It would be awfully hard to break all the Middle School and HS social norms and do so. I don't agree it would be impossible physically, but certainly it would be rare. In limited personal experience I coached a few.
