Poor press guy is working at the frigging Star Press. A staff consisting of literally a handful of low paid writers for a dwindling circulation in a community not too interested in local news, not enough to pay for it anyway.
You probably made his day by mentioning him. Somebody out there is reading his stories!
Seriously Rob, BSU needs coverage in Indy and state wide, so whatever he writes which goes into the USAToday cloud is great with me. Even a coaching controversy. It would mean somebody out there cares, or an editor thought so.
The other part about how hard the BSU staff works, in what is a very hard job at any mid major, is sadly also something few care about, too.
Ben Breiner worked at the same lowely star press not long ago. He wrote same great articles and would ask tough questions. He is now the lead Beat writer for South Carolina and doing quite well for himself.. You get what you put in Yep. Fanboy is not the path to being a good reporter. You have to be able to ask questions/seek answers outside the status quo. You have to have some discernment and not just take everything you’re fed at face value. Otherwise you’re just a fan blogger.

Ryan Ogara who was not the best but improved over time. His best pieces were not always about BSU although his Hollywood piece was great. He moved on to work for a recruiting service and is writing some nice stuff for them. I like Guskey the Kid and I hope he learns. I talk to him regularly but I'm not a sugar-coater I praise him on a good article and tell him when writes a shitter.. Lately it's been more shitter and quite frankly his walking the dog replys are a slap in the face to people who care

And your right I am friends with coaches on both the basketball and football staff. Even after knowing them for years 75% of what they tell me is coach speak bullshit. They know it I know it you gotta read between the lines. I try not to talk BSU with them but when it does happen if something sounds fishy I call them on it just like I would with any other friend. Football staff busts their ass every single one of them. Basketball assistants bust their ass. Whit does not I can't explain it any better

S-P is not a great job, but the number of jobs is smaller every year. I hope Ben gets a chance to move up from there at least a step or two, but is there much of a future for these guys. The problem for print journalists is that local papers of all sizes, a city like Indianapolis, even Chicago, Philadelphia and elsewhere, these papers are being acquired by media groups, and then you see consolidation and newsrooms gutted. Jobs disappear.
You have to wonder how many better jobs there are going to be for guys from the smaller and smaller number of newspapers there are. I doubt we see very many reporters from this generation continue for the long haul.
Also let's be honest, the BB program here was not changed and isn't likely going to be changed by a writer's presence. I recall an awful lot of coverage which was very much the same by Breiner.

The news situation has deteriorated here steadily over time, and a lot of that is to be completely fair, there probably isn't much newsworthy in Muncie in some ways.
But, as population and circulation drop, and as people go to social media for local news, the newspaper is not the institution of influence it once was. The editor and reporters used to control and focus attention. We depended on them to filter the information and relied on them to go out and objectively discover what is going on. Now they are easy to ignore. Worse, whatever you happen to believe is true, right or wrong, you can now easily look around for sources that agree.
A source tells you something you don't want to believe you stop listening, even it's true.

No writer is going to change any program unless the break a scathing article. Thats not there job a writers job especially a beat writer is to write the common game day article but also have the guts to tactfully ask the harder questions when warranted. The guys who learn to do that move on plain and simple. If you take it too far you burn your bridges and become Tom Davis if you become a fanboy you stay in Muncie till they close shop on the paper. There are plenty hundreds and hundreds of websites to write for some can pay a journalist a pretty good living

And those hundreds of websites, too often pay hundreds of dollars. Don't kid yourself about the jobs out there. If we on the forum didn't have other income and enjoyed writing we wouldn't be putting newspapers out of business.

Of course many pay nothing but many pay a lot for a sports writer but you have to be good to get those jobs.. There is nothing different other than the outlet

Considering the quality of his work he should feel very fortunate. Is there anyone doing lousy work that 00 won’t defend? Check that, are there any non-Republicans doing lousy work that 00 won’t defend? It’s almost like he disdains competence.
00 is just sticking up for a teammate....another member of Team Mediocrity, consisting of:
Jim Whitford An indifferent AD squarely focused on her next job and maybe a little on gender-related things A lapdog beat reporter A cohort of jock-sniffing "supportive" fans

I confess. I am proud of Team BSU and value what we do here.
Wish we had world class city and newspaper, wish we were much better in many ways.
I am not going not going to blame the cub reporter, who is learning his trade, for my disappointment. Or, rant at the student who calls me working on a fund drive.
BSU needs help, OK, pitch in. You can help improve things. Pledge some money. Volunteer some time. Join the team.

You can play on the team and still say your teams sucks. I donated yesterday, I buy season tickets for multiple sports. I talk up BSU to everyone that will listen. I don't make excuses when something is not right.

I think 00 would have to climb several rungs before his peers would consider him mediocre. This guy is a complete clown.
