I am on campus and you are right about Whitford not being an activist generally or a leader in any social movement. He did support Ish and the other players and athletes who were engaged in BLM and it was not driven by "perception" or activism but rather was supportive coaching, being a good human being, for which both he deserves credit in helping Moses and the rest of the team through the trials they faced. We saw a coach before him face a far less serious set of similar emotional challenges with a team that lost it completely and collapsed. Most give him some credit for that. Being a good human being, being supportive are not, IMO, reasons enough to retain a coach who has underwhelmed. Someone who's afraid to let go of such a coach because of those reasons would appear to lack confidence in his/her ability to judge the character of the people he hires, or at least displays the inability to do a decent job of vetting potential hires. Not a person you'd think you'd want as university president or AD. Just hard for me to believe that Mearns or Goetz lack confidence that that they could find a person who's not only a better coach than Whitford but also a good human being.

Of course, not enough by itself. But it's a plus he handled problems well.
Hate to see that considered some kind of negative.

Not sure this is worthy of a new thread but it's really true.. Got me thinking about the star press guys and how gullible tgey are and how they only report what they are fed.. I will give the new guy some credit he at least has pointed out some flaws when reporting football

Local papers can't do much better.
How much can we expect?
They have better access than we do, report a few things we don't know, probably all we could hope for. They're kids with no experience or perspective working cheap for OJT.
Nobody here would take the job, we don't want editing or deadlines...and despite all the time wasted here, we value our time.

No none of us would take the job but everyone one of us know more inside and outside news than sny beat reporter we have had in years. Our little board offers so much more content than a real newspaper that should not happen. You just have to be able to sift through our add ramblings to find it

I willing to listen to an offer by the SP. And would I be allowed to still make Longwood jokes?

I would think a Star Press paycheck for a recent journalism major is a great job compared to what their classmates are getting at Target and Starbucks. At least they can leverage the experience into something upstream.

That byline is why they take the job. They'll have a portfolio of stories, most they grammar and spell checked.

You like movies about gladiators? I asked because the SP job would required you to cover those Muncie/Delaware County HS sports of all varieties. Unfortunately they don't have a job just serving as a gadfly to BSU sports.
You are in the right place, here, to do that. But the pay here is even lower than the SP. Longwood jokes are allowed, though. And there is no editor here, even if you do get frequent feedback.

So I'm going to give our star press guy a break. First off his initial impression story was not all that bad.. secondly I learned that he is only getting media availability once a week. I'm not sure how your supposed to do a decent job if you can only ask questions to the coaches once week

After the easy warm-up game against Ball State, Michigan Tech found some tougher going against DII opponents like McKendree, Minnesota Duluth, Northern Michigan, which were among their seven losses. And they bowed out in the 2nd round of the GLIAC tourney.
Michigan Tech's coach may be rethinking the wisdom of his cupcake pre-season schedule.
