They had a 13% chance to win. The fact they were even in it should make us proud. Would you have said that at the beginning of the season? Obviously need to clean up the passing game. Understatement of the season. Yes, I’m super proud that Ball State was in the game against another conference opponent. The bar has been set high.

I am ALWAYS proud when we ALMOST win a game in the MAC.
That is what we have come to celebrate as fans.

Our record should not deter Neu from phasing in another style QB on a few series at this point. If not for performance, then injury possibility readiness for the rest of this season and next. I can’t think of a single aspect of Neu’s tenure here that would make me think he would do that. I haven’t watched the post-game presser yet, and I don’t know how much of what he says he believes, but I get the impression Neu thinks we were fighting for a MAC championship because the system is working. I expect him to credit Toledo’s defense in shutting down Paddock. I'd say this is pretty accurate. We're playing Schudel style, 90's football. Run the ball, punt for field position, complete a pass here and there. Neu and Lynch (from the 90's style of football family) appear to feel that's the winning formula and refuse to attempt to work anything else in. Except we are NOT completing passes here and there in our losses. Losing the EMU and Toledo games, where we had leads in the second half and had possession, and good field position, and we get NOTHING is unacceptable. Not even a field goal when we start on the opponent's side of the field? It's also very apparent just how much we miss Justin Hall. He was a true playmaker and could make chicken salad out of chicken shit. We have no one like that now. They try to make Jackson that but truthfully he's just not. Good WR, but not Justin Hall. The offense is just so flat and plodding. Rarely explosive. With a QB who's a statue there is ZERO happening if he can't get the ball out right away, and usually that right away is a 4 yard pass when we need 11 yards. 4th and 18 for us, we have better odds of running Steele than Paddock converting that. No chance in hell. UT converted a 1st and 20 on their winning drive. Like, in one play. 20 yards for us is often 4 or 5 plays. Yes, I'm disgusted we lost yet another winnable game, and it's not game 3 of the season, it was game 10. We should have figured some things out by now.

Our receivers are not good at getting open.
There was a throw to Jackson that summed up how our receivers run routes. Jackson ran downfield about 20 yards, turned to the far sideline, turned back to the Paddock, and waited for the ball to arrive. Meanwhile, the defender is closing on him from behind, but since Jackson didn't move back towards the ball, the defender was able to stick a hand in to deflect it. Receivers are completely unaware of where the defender is. This falls on Knight, the receivers coach. And where is Yo'Heinz? He's been fading since the GaSo game, and had only 1 catch for 5 yards last night. Although I will say that Brady Hunt has great hands. He was catching everything, partly he's much taller than the defenders covering him.
Paddock can't anticipate receivers getting open after he throws because they usually don't. Changing QB's won't solve that. He ends up having to hang onto the ball too long, as we saw later in the game, which led to sacks, off-balance throws, and few completions.

Changing QB's won't solve that. He ends up having to hang onto the ball too long, as we saw later in the game, which led to sacks, off-balance throws, and few completions. I agree with most of that, but I also think Paddock is unable to "throw receivers open." He has to see them open and then throw it so, the ball is late and db's can close. Can't tell you how many passes get knocked away by the db because of that. Our offense is predicated on timing and on WR's being in certain spots and turning for the ball rather than leading the WR's across or down the field. It's, get the snap, turn and throw and the guy is supposed to be in the spot Paddock is throwing to, open or not. There's no route adjustments or Paddock creating something when the play breaks down. So, all we get are WR's who catch the ball in zero position to run after the catch, or, the ball gets knocked away. Over and over. Then the occasional go route happens and occasionally Jackson is running in space and Paddock gets it to him. Even the TD vs Kent the ball was late and short but Jackson broke the tackle and scored anyway. As Rocky Boiman said at the time, a good throw would have been an even easier TD with no one touching Jackson. There's no anticipation in our offense. Hit your spot, throw to the spot. And as we've seen, if Paddock doesn't throw it exactly to that spot our guys ain't catching it. (other than the TE's who make all kinds of catches. IMO Koziol is severely underused until we hit the red zone) As for YoHeinz, hard to tell if he's still injured or just isn't making the effort. Have to believe we have other guys behind him who are hungrier and more willing to make themselves better targets. Yo, unless it's a throw in the end zone, doesn't seem to make all that much effort if the ball doesn't hit him between the numbers. But that's maybe just my opinion. I do agree that it doesn't appear our WR's are getting good training on technique. Routes seem to be slow developing and sloppy. I don't know, I just know the passing game is mostly dysfunctional, especially against aggressive DBs. We could probably do a ton more with our RB's out of the backfield, but, the offense.

Close enough game we regret it. But I regret 2 earlier games a lot more.
Wo ever really expected a win here?
For that matter who expected a hell of lot more from QB play all year? Paddock was always going to be a game manager and needed outstanding playmakers to do much better.
We covered the spread. This was one of the MAC good teams we beat only if they are flat.
We are pretty much where we thought we'd be this year. Win one more, maybe 1 chance in 3 for that, and we are better than most predicted.
On to the next game.

If I was making $450,000 as a football coach, I wouldn’t be hitching my fifth wheel to Paddock.
But, then again, I wouldn’t be hitched up to a Lynch either.
We got what we got. Ain’t going to change.

The extremely sad, stark reality. We're better than expected, so cool. But, we not as good as we now could be, so, not cool and not acceptable. If we're going to be good enough to be tied late with Toledo then dammit we ought to be able to go ahead and win that game, and the EMU game. Being "better than expected" transitions to should be having better results once you've proven you ARE capable of the better results. Hey we were competitive isn't good enough if you've already shown you should win.

If you said all that about EMU only, I'd wholeheartedly agree.
We're good enough to expect to beat EMU...

Understatement of the season. Yes, I’m super proud that Ball State was in the game against another conference opponent. The bar has been set high. I think "proud" is definitely the wrong word, but we're not talking about Neu's coaching career highlights. We're going to lose conference games. I am frustrated by the result last night but when you're in a close game getting or missing a couple breaks will decide the game. If Jackson makes that 3rd down catch maybe we win. If we make one particular missed tackle I'm remembering maybe we win. I think from last year we took a step back in talent. Is Paddock better than Plitt? Is Jackson better than Hall? I don't think I can think of a single position where we replaced a guy with a noticeably better guy. I think we've overperformed all season, which puts us in the position to win games, but in a one possession game anything can happen. And I get that it's Mike's job to stock the cupboard.

Who would you hitch it to? That's the problem. As a thought exercise, everyone who wants to pull Paddock should answer this hypothetical: we pull Paddock, the wheels fall off, we get blown out by Ohio and lose a heartbreaker to miss bowl eligibility to Miami. We finish the season with three straight losses and a dumpster fire. You're logging in to express your opinion, what do you write?

Passing game has really turned for the worse in the second half of the season, the Man of Steel has saved our butts for the most part. I love the moxie of Paddock, but he is not a winning QB at this level. He is not a great passer, he definitely is not a run option QB which you need at our level. It’s time to try someone out for these last two games, but we all know the Neu will not do this! Let’s win our sixth!

What is it with the Lynch family grabbing OC jobs? When Bill Lynch was hired by IU the head coach said Lynch was the missing piece in his staff! Are you kidding me? In my experience I could not understand what drove the IU coach to say that or why they hired him. Joey was a pretty good QB for us but never proved himself as a great OC. Now Neu is hitching his future on another Lynch. Makes no sense to me.
