Just able to go back and watch the replay from yesterday.
I wonder what Illinois State's Sandage thought of the two BSU teams he played against. Last year in our loss at Western Illinois, he shot 11-16 FG, 7-9 3PFG for 33 points. Yesterday he was 4-9 FG, 2-5 3PFG for 11 points and also had 4 turnovers.
Hate to see Sparks continuing to struggle from the line. 0-4 yesterday. Just kinda nitpicking there because really I thought everybody played pretty well, but just worry those will come back to haunt us at some point.
So our bench players had a combined stat line of 1-3 FG, 0-1 3PFG, 4R, 3A, and 0 TO in 39 minutes. I guess I'd like that to be a little heftier, but I thought Jihad and Bum as least really played pretty well. Neither of our front-court starters (Sparks and Pearson) played more than 30-minutes. If we're able to put 5 players in double figures and we're not really overworking our shallow front-court, how much does it matter if those five are starters?
Even though I guess I should just move on, I find it hard not to make comparisons to last year's team. Other than defense, I was struck by what we did with the lead when we got it up over 10 with about 10 minutes left. There were no 3s, just feeding the post or driving to the basket. High percentages shots. Force the opponent to defend or foul. Nothing that was part of the Whitford playbook.
Somebody here also mentioned a timeout. That had to be the one with about 8:30 left. Our 13-point lead had been cut to 9 after 2 straight turnovers and Lewis didn't hesitate even though the under 8 media timeout was only 30 seconds away. By the time the actual under 8 timeout came, we had scored on consecutive possessions to re-establish the lead. How many times did we lament that Whitford had no feel for the game; was just all analytics. Clearly, Lewis has a bit of a feel for the game.

Our D was solid. Our guard tandem is very impressive. Sellers is our best athlete hands down. Starting to get worried about Sparks at the line. Every FT shot is an adventure- jumping from the line, no follow through, etc. Hope that gets ironed out soon.
It is still early days, but the improvement of this team is impressive. Pearson IMO has been the biggest surprise for me. Go Cards!

Looked pretty sparse on TV. I’m sure crowd arrived in time for the 2nd game. A lot of folks were in the bars or concourse watching to Colts collapse. Can't miss a trainwreck!

I wish we had at least one more game with a quality opponent here the last part of December. We start off the MAC with two of the three teams ranked ahead of us...toledo and Akron.

It is a tough start. Ohio on the road is always a hard game. Long bus ride, usually a tough home court to win on. We could easily start out with 2 road losses, and beating Akron at home is no easy game.
OTOH a week or two or a tough opponent isn't going to develop the bench we need or add size we need to be significantly better and closer to Kent.
The first will take time to improve. Might not ever happen we're a lot better this year, we do look very good right now. We can play equal to everyone else as it is.
But a tough schedule it is and a coaching challenge to stay at this level right now.

I wish we could have the Indiana State game back. I’d like to see that game now.

I wish we could have the Indiana State game back. I’d like to see that game now. The MAC will have games like that. I am sure we'll lose game(s) we coulda shoulda won and no doubt win game(s) where the opponent says that.
What I like is we have shown the players how that difference is in their hands and dependent on their focus and effort. Lewis has more or less proven to them they need to listen to him, play hard D and they can win against tough teams. We have NOT proven we can beat superior teams except that we have turned what on paper are a couple of closer games into notable margins of victory.
It will be a dogfight in conference 2-5.
