I understand how it ended up there. But not desirable. Maybe "acceptable" this year. Not next.

As has previously been stated by some of the established folks on this board, we ain't gonna get many big name teams to play us. We might slip one in there on occasion, but it ain't likely to happen often. And I'll say this again, as I have in other threads, we played 13 OOC games this year and I would be perfectly happy for 12 of those to be 6 local MAC level teams and on a home and home basis, each year. I'm talking teams like Indiana State, Valpo, NKU, SIU, Fort Wayne, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois, Youngstown State, Cleveland State, the Chicago schools and I don't know who else that are more regional than the big expensive travel games. This isn't just about the dollars, but I think they generate more interest than playing distant teams, too. I know in a conversation that I had with Lewis, this was one of his issues this year. He said we could have played Manhattan or someone like that, but it was going to cost like "X" number of dollars for the road portion of a two year home and home agreement and he just din't feel it was worth that expense. Man, I appreciated him being that financially prudent. IF we are able to keep all our guys, it's going to be even more difficult to get people to agree to play us over the next couple of years, home or away. I don't want to sound too much like Sherm, and I know Basketball isn't nearly as costly, but can you just imagine how expensive it is going to be for us to send our football team to Auburn next year May be close to 2 million dollar payday, but how much of that are we spending on travel, rooms, meals and etc. out of that check. Obviously, I don't know the details on a contract like that, but I don't think they pay any expense for that game other than the contracted dollar figure. Just one fellas opinion, but like has been said, that's all a message board is all about anyway.

As far as football road trips are concerned, I don't know any high-ups in this regime like I did the last few, but in the past I was told by more than one president of the university the athletic department absorbed all travel costs and the paychecks went directly into the university general revenue/ fund pool. I'd be willing to bet that hasn't changed, so athletics takes football expenses directly on the chin in terms of its overall budget. And yes, you are correct that these road trips are EXTREMELY expensive. For instance, the university spent well over one million $ for travel to each of the last 2 bowl games, and you can bet that games to Auburn, Georgia, West Point, Austin, etc. are even more expensive than that because of all the entertaining they do plus the inherent costs of traveling with an entire roster, coaching staff, support staff, and media, along with half the cabinet, BoT, state reps and senators, donors, good ole boy network, etc. The amount of money the university spends on football is purely criminal compared to the ROI, which is pretty much zero relative to expenses.

When discussing the finances of BSU football, your choices are either to sound like me, or sound like a childish idiot, because the situation is about as clear as it could possibly be.

Sherm, you just don't appreciate the millions of dollars of good will generated annually.

Personally, we need a stronger non-conference schedule next year. This year was a great building block and a great first year for the new coaching staff, but we will need to be more ready for conference play next year. Part of the problem I believe that Coach Lewis, as we all did, underestimated this team and schedule a weak non conference. Then, when we came into MAC play, we weren't ready to play. Honestly, some of these MAC teams are some of the better teams we play. We came into MAC play by beating last year’s regular season champ, last year’s tourney champ, and two of the three teams tied for first right now. How exactly were we not “ready to play”? I'm simply saying that we haven't played very many high level, high intensity, great atmosphere games. Come tournament time, we will have wanted some experience under our belt. And yes, I'd say we were very ready to play Kent and Buffalo, wouldn't you?

I thought you were saying that due to a weak non-conference schedule we weren’t ready for the level of competition that has us one game out of first place 11 games into conference play. We definitely did not look ready to play against Kent or Buffalo. It’s just that playing Earlham in November had nothing to do with it.

Over the season I have watched parts of or most of the MAC games. These games from top to bottom are dog fights for the full 40 minutes. No easy games. Eastern was nearly unstoppable and Ohio last night mugged Castenada. Wilson for Ohio continues to be a difference maker. Once again Carry was the difference for Kent but also Thompson. the speed of Buffalo and Kent are the best in the MAC. Kent continues to hack their way forward on defense. Buffalo was in the bonus with 12 minutes to go in 2nd half.

The MAC main office loves it some Ohio U.
